Altamont Wins at Sesser-Valier; C'land, Neoga Fall At Vandalia, Monticello Tourneys

 SESSER -- Altamont High School went into the Sesser-Valier Boys Basketball Tournament and handed DuQuoin a 68-48 loss Tuesday evening.

The Indians put up a three-point barrage in the opening quarter to take a 25-13 lead. Alec Jahraus and Eli Miller connected on two three-pointers each while Kaden Davis added one. Kaidyn Miller tallied six points on three regular baskets.

The lead stood at 41-31 at halftime. DuQuoin came back with a 13-13 third period to pull within six points. But Altamont went on a 16-4 final quarter run behind Miller's eight points and a three-pointer and free throw by Elam.

K. Miller led the way for Altamont with 21 points on nine field goals that included one three-pointer, and was two of two at the line. Also in double digits were E. Miller and Elam with 13 points each.

Altamont will be back in action today, taking on Goreville, a 69-50 winner over New Athens. In the other two games Tuesday, Waltonville downed Marissa 68-36 while Red Bud won over Sesser-Valier 56-49.

At Vandalia

Cumberland fell In its opening round game to Shelbyville, 50-32 as the Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament opened play Tuesday evening.

The Vandals ripped out to a 13-4 opening quarter lead and led 25-10 at halftime. Shelbyville also had the advantage in the second half, 25-22.

The Pirates had one player reach double figures. Kelby Bierman led the way with 19 points on nine field goals, one of those a three-pointer.

The Cumberland hit four of 12 from the free throw line while Shelbyville was five of 10.

At Monticello

Neoga ran into a buzzsaw in its opening round game at the Monticello Holiday Tournament Tuesday.

The host Sages handed Neoga a 64-26 loss. The Sages put the game away early with a 29-9 opening quarter run.

Only one player hit double digits for Monticello, Maddux Quick with 14. There were nine other players who scored in the game. The Sages hit 11 three-pointers in the contest led by Quick with four and Raiden Colbert with three.

Neoga was led by Landon Titus with nine points. Gavin Ray led in rebounds with five.

Things didn't get any better as Neoga faced Clinton and lost, 73-32. Once again the opposing team tore out to a big opening quarter lead, 27-7.

Neoga's Luke Keller and Trey Sheehan led the way with eight points each.  Keller led in rebounds with four.

Neoga faces Ridgeview today at 2 p.m.

In other games Tuesday, Clinton defeated Ridgeview, 72-53; Tuscola trounced Oakwood, 80-37; Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley defeated Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 59-33 and Monticello downed Ridgeview, 64-24.
