Effingham city council members informally agreed this week to accept a quote for a sign at the TREC Trailhead along Outer Belt West.

The project will be formally voted on at a future meeting. Council members discussed the impact of the trail on those visiting Effingham and utilizing the signage to promote the network of trails.

Council members also discussed utilizing the earned interest on bonds to make the annual payments due on those bonds. The move lets the City abate the levy for the amount of the bond payment.

The Council formally banned public camping in public areas of Effingham, declaring it a nuisance, and storing any items collected so they can be retrieved by the owner. It was also approved to cover one-fourth of the costs of exterior housing rehabilitation of Nichole Shryock's property at 706 South Park Street. The City's share of the cost is $7,128.75.

Council members approved a special use permit for development of a car wash between Smoothie King and Northside Ford along Ford Avenue. The car wash will be utilized by Northside, but will also be open to the public. Also approved was rezoning of 509 South Maple Street for development with a six-to-eight-unit apartment complex.

City officials discussed an updated building code, as well as updating the size of address numbers on buildings to at least six inches in size.
