Longtime St. Elmo superintendent Deborah Philpot was chosen Monday by the Teutopolis School Board to serve as the district's interim superintendent until a permanent successor to Bill Fritcher is selected.

Philpot, who completed 35 years in education before her retirement two years ago, served as St. Elmo superintendent for 12 years. Under terms of her retirement, she can work up to 120 days for the Teutopolis district.

Monday was Fritcher's first day on the job as superintendent of the Neoga school district.

Philpot said she had told her husband just recently that she would be interested in an interim position, and then the Teutopolis job became available.

Board member Leon Gobczynski voted "present" on Philpot's hiring.

Teutopolis Board President Brad Koester said now that Philpot is on board as interim superintendent, the process can continue toward choosing a permanent superintendent.

Also Monday, the Teutopolis board approved a floor plan for a proposed locker room and restroom renovation in the high school next to J.H. Griffin Gym.

Under the plan, there would be two locker rooms, each with an office that could be used by a P.E. teacher. The coaches office along the hallway across from the gym would remain along with its restroom although the space would be renovated. No restrooms would be included in the other two offices. A previously-discussed elevator has been eliminated. There will be a storage space and office area for the band, and an area for mechanical equipment.

Board member Brian Meyer voted against the motion to approve the floor plan.

The plans for the project will now be completed, and the Board will vote later this year on whether to let the work out for bids.
