St. Anthony Wins Regional Title, Area Volleyball Roundup

St. Anthony won the Class 2A Pana Regional Tuesday evening.

Effingham St. Anthony is a regional champion. The Bulldogs claimed a pretty easy victory over Shelbyville to win the Class 2A Pana Volleyball Regional Thursday evening.

St. Anthony won the opener 25-18 then came back to finish out the match 25-10. Jena Woltman and Rachel Schultz led in aces with three each. Lauren Wendt tallied seven kills. Schultz led in digs with 11. Hailey Mathias tallied 17 assists along with one block. Wendt and Maggie Mumm had one block each.

The Bulldogs will now head to the Newton Sectional Tuesday where they will face Robinson at 7 p.m.

At Pana

St. Anthony -- Wortman, 2 aces; Mathias, 2 aces, 4 kills, 6 digs, 17 assist, 1 block; Woltman, 3 aces, 1 dig, 3 assists; Wendt, 7 kills, 1 dig, 1 block; Braunecker, 3 kills, 1 dig; Mumm, 4 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist, 1 block; Nuxoll, 6 kills, 4 digs; Schultz, 3 aces, 11 digs; Schmidt, 1 dig

 

Class 2 A Casey-Westfield Regional

Robinson ended any hopes Newton had of competing in its own sectional next week but the Eagles didn't give up easily.

Robinson won the opener 25-22 but Newton came back with a 25-23 victory sending the match into a final game. Robinson pulled it out 25-14.

Robinson now advances to the Newton Sectional Tuesday against Effingham St. Anthony at 7 p.m.

 

Class 2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Altamont saw a very successful season come to a close in the championship match of this regional.

Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran won over the Indians 25-17, 25-15. Altamont was led by  White and Kopplin with five kills each. Wendling had nine assists. Ledbetter led in digs with six. The Indians finish the season with a sparkling 26-8 record.

Metro East Lutheran will face Carlinville at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Newton Sectional. Carlinville beat Staunton 25-13, 25-13 to win the Piasa Southwestern Regional.

At St. Elmo

Altamont -- White, 5 kills, 4 digs, 1 stuff block; Kopplin, 5 kills, 3 digs, 1 stuff block; Ledbetter, 2 kills, 6 digs; Alwardt, 3 kills, 1 stuff block; Laatsch, 2 kills; Wendling, 9 assists; Winters, 3 digs; Johnson, 2 digs

 

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg continued its run by downing Neoga 29-27, 25-21 to win the Dieterich Regional championship.

"It was a very intense match," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Each point was a battle. Neoga was able to return most of our hits so it was a really tough match. Neoga put up a good fight. Our play wasn't as smooth as usual and we seemed to be lacking some confidence. I chalk that up to nerves. We kept at it and it paid off in the end."

Baylee Quast and Kendall Knop led the Comets in aces with two each. Brittani Tabbert had 10 kills. Becca Schlechte led in assists with 12. The Comets improve to 24-12 and will now travel to Arcola Tuesday for sectional action against Kansas at 6 p.m. In the second match, Arthur-Lovington faces Broadlands Heritage at 7 p.m.

At Dieterich

Class 1A Arcola Regional

Windsor saw its season end with a loss to Arthur-Lovington in the championship match of the Arcola Regional.

The Blue Devils won the opener 25-23 but Arthur-Lovington came back with a 25-17 tally to send the match into a final game where Arthur-Lovington won 25-21.

Arthur-Lovington now advances to the Arcola Sectional Tuesday against Broadlands Heritage at 7 p.m.

 

Class 1A South Central Regional

The homestanding Cougars claimed the championship of their own regional. South Central won the opener 25-18 but North Clay came back with a 25-18 count.

South Central then claimed the title with a 25-19 score. The Cougars now advance to the Lebanon Sectional Tuesday against Cisne in the second match at 7 p.m. Woodlawn faces Lebanon in the opening match at 6 p.m.

 

Class 3A Olney Regional

Mattoon picked up the victory over Charleston Thursday evening to win the Olney Regional title.

The Green Wave won in two games, 25-16, 25-18. Mattoon now advances to its own sectional Tuesday against Rochester at 7 p.m. In the opener, Springfield will take on Roxana at 6 p.m.
