Effingham High School saw its volleyball season come to a close in the Class 3A Olney Regional Tuesday evening.

The Hearts fell to Charleston in the opener 25-22 but came back with a 25-12 victory. The Trojans then claimed a 25-23 win for the match.

Effingham was led by Josie Zerrusen in digs with 18, Bethany Donaldson in kills with 12, Chandler Ramey in aces with four, Felicia Totten in assists with 33 and Stephanie Robb in blocks with five.

In the other match, Mattoon defeated Olney, 25-13, 25-10.  Mattoon will now face Charleston at 6 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship.

At Olney

Varsity Match

Effingham -- Donaldson, 9 digs, 12 kills, 2 blocks; Beals, 6 kills; Zerrusen, 18 digs; Ramey, 10 digs, 10 kills, 4 aces; Nunamaker, 1 assist, 3 kills, 1 block; Totten, 3 digs, 33 assists, 1 block; Robb, 3 digs, 8 kills, 5 blocks; Fred, 7 digs, 1 kill, 1 ace

 

Class 2A Pana Regional

Effingham St. Anthony advanced to the championship of the Pana Regional with a victory over the host Panthers.

St. Anthony won 25-20, 25-17. Haylee Mathis had three aces, 13 kills, 15 assists and two blocks to lead the Bulldogs. Rachel Schultz led in digs with seven.

In the second match of the evening, Shelbyville defeated Teutopolis 25-15, 25-13.

St. Anthony now meets Shelbyville Thursday at 6 p.m. for the regional title.

At Pana

Varsity Match

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg and Neoga will square off for the championship of the Dieterich Regional Thursday at 6 p.m. after picking up victories Tuesday.

Stew-Stras defeated host Dieterich 25-21, 25-3. Kendall Knop led in aces with five and digs with four. Becca Schlechte had 10 kills while Baylee Quast had 18 assists. Clara Kaufman led in blocks with two solo and two assists.

"We didn't come out with much spark in game one," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Service errors killed us but we were able to stay alive. Game two we came out strong and took the lead quickly with Kendall's five point service streak followed by Sarah Locke's serving 17 consecutive serves. The girls know we have to come out strong Thursday."

In the second match, Neoga was a winner over Cowden-Herrick 25-10, 25-13.

At Dieterich

Class 2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Altamont defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown 25-10, 25-13 to advance to the championship match Thursday.

Kopplin and White had five kills each for the winners. White had three aces and two stuff blocks. Wendling led in assists with 10. Winters led in digs with three. The Indians are now 26-7 on the season.

In the second match, Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran downed Flora 25-14, 25-19 and will now face Altamont for the champoinship.

At St. Elmo

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Newton will be playing for the championship of the Casey-Westfield Regional against Robinson at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Eagles defeated Marshall 25-17, 23-25, 25-20. G. Sandschafer led in aces with four while T. Johnson and A. Cartright led in kills with 12 each. B. Koebele had 30 assists and H. Litzelman had four blocks. Sandschafer and E. Johnson led in digs with 10 each. Newton is now 24-12 on the season.

Robinson defeated host Casey-Westfield 25-16, 24-26, 25-11.

At Casey

Class 1A South Central Regional

North Clay (Louisville) will face South Central at 6 p.m. Thursday for the regional title after picking up victories Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals defeated Ramsey 25-12, 25-12. South Central was a 25-23, 30-28 winner over Patoka.

 

Class 1A Arcola Regional

Windsor moved into the title contest of the Arcola Regional with a victory Tuesday. The Blue Devils defeated Arcola 25-19, 26-24.

In the opener, Arthur-Lovington downed Atwood-Hammond 25-23, 25-19.

Arthur-Lovington and Windsor will square off Thursday at 6 p.m. for the crown.
