EHS Downs Charleston, Area Volleyball Roundup

Effingham High School picked up an Apollo Conference volleyball victory by downing Charleston three volleyball games Thursday.

The Hearts won the opener 25-15 but Charleston came back with a 25-23 victory. EHS then pounded home a 25-15 win for the match to improve to 1-0 in the conference.

Felicia Totten had 12 digs, 27 assists and three aces for the winners. Chandler Ramey led in kills with 12. Bethany Donaldson, Josie Zerrusen and Stephanie Robb had two blocks each.

In the junior varsity contest, Charleston won 17-25, 25-17, 25-18. EHS drops to 0-1 in the conference, 4-4 overall. In an exhibition match, Effingham won 28-26 and Charleston won 25-18. EHS is 2-1-1.

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg continues to move along in the National Trail Conference. The Comets claimed a 25-17, 25-20 varsity victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown to improve to 3-1 in the conference. The Comets are now 7-5 overall.

"The girls really had to work through some emotion and play the game tonight after senior Lindsay Burton went down with an injury that took her off the court early in game one and she was out the rest of the match," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Nerves were rattled and it was hard to pull it together, but they did. We just wish Lindsay the best. Sophomore Elena Kaufman replaced her and did an exceptional job."

The Comets were led by Kendall Knop with three aces, Baylee Quast with 11 assists, Sarah Locke with eight digs and Brittani Tabbert with six kills.

In junior varsity play, St. Elmo/Brownstown won 25-22, 25-17.  Stew-Stras drops to 3-1 in the conference, 5-2 overall. Stew-Stras split with St. Elmo/Brownstown in exhibition play with the homestanders winning the first game 25-16 and St. Elmo/Brownstown back with a 25-22 victory.

At Dieterich

South Central came calling and picked up a varsity victory over Dieterich in National Trail Conference action.

The Cougars won 25-17, 25-13. Dieterich drops to 0-3 in the conference, 1-5 overall. Dieterich was led by Mindy Bohnhoff with four points, four digs and four assists. Mallorie Vahling had three kills.

At Neoga

Neoga claimed a National Trail Conference win over Teutopolis. The Indians won the opener 25-14 before T-town came back with a 26-24 victory. Neoga then claimed the match 25-19.

Neoga was led by Courtney Croy with 13 kills and 22 blocks, Demmie Long with 23 assists and Mallori Harshman with 18 digs.

T-town won the junior vasrity match 17-25, 25-17, 25-19.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick hosted Beecher City in volleyball action and picked up the National Trail Conference win in three games.

Beecher City won the opener 25-14 but Cowden-Herrick rallied to win the second game 25-21 and took the match 25-13. Beecher City drops to 4-7 overall.

Beecher City was led by Felicia Johnson with two aces, Kirby Herrmann with 11 kills; Kirsten Buzzard with 13 digs and Kacie Hilt with 18 assists.

Cowden-Herrick also claimed the junior varsity contest 25-9, 25-12.

Newton improved its record to 10-5 overall with a 25-20, 25-15 victory over Casey-Westfield.

T. Johnson led the Eagles in kills with seven while G. Zerrusen had 13 assists. E. Johnson led in digs with six.

In junior varsity play, Casey-Westfield won 25-20, 25-12. Newton claimed the freshman match 25-9, 25-15.
