NEWTON -- Effingham High School lost its opener 25-22 but came back in the second game with a 25-17 victory and then claimed the volleyball match over Newton 25-22 Thursday evening.
Madeline Mitchell and Josie Zerrusen led the Hearts in digs with eight each. Felicia Totten had 21 assists. Chandler Ramey led in kills with 10 while Stephanie Robb added nine. Robb had two aces and two blocks along with Brittany Beals with two blocks. EHS improves to 1-1.
Leading Newton were T. Johnson in aces with six, A. Cartright in kills with seven, G. Zerrusen in assists with 10 and E. Johnson in digs with 12.
In junior varsity play, Effingham won 25-16, 25-9 to improve to 2-0. Newton won the freshman match 25-22, 25-21. EHS drops to 0-2.

Always tough Edwards County (Albion) downed Effingham St. Anthony 25-15, 25-22.
The Bulldogs were led by Lauren Wendt in kills with nine. Rachel Schultz had five digs. Haylee Mathis had 23 assists and three blocks.
In junior varsity play, Edwards County won 25-21, 25-18.

Altamont picked up a victory over Casey-Westfield. The Indians won the opener 25-12 but Casey-Westfield came back with a 25-21 victory. Altamont then went out 25-14 for the match.
Alwardt led in kills with six while Ledbetter had six digs and two stuff blocks. Wendling had 16 assists while White led in aces with four. Alwardt and White had two stuff blocks each.
Altamont improves to 5-1 on the season. The Indians fell in junior varsity play 25-23, 25-19 and split in the preliminary match, losing 25-23 then winning 21-15.
Altamont will host an invitational tournament Saturday with Beecher City, Lincolnwood and Vandalia in Pool A and Cumberland, Greenville, Nokomis and South Central in Pool B. Matches start at 8:30 a.m. and finish out with final round matches starting at 3:30 p.m.

Marshall tallied a victory over Dieterich in varsity play, 25-11, 25-19. The Movin' Maroons drop to 0-2 on the season.
Mallorie Vahling led Dieterich with three points and two aces. Aakriti Dogra had five digs. Madison Boerngen had four kills. Faith Boerngen had six assists.
In junior varsity play, Marshall won 25-18, 21-25, 25-12 and in freshman/sophomore action, Marshall won 25-20, 26-24.

Stewardson-Strasburg improved to 2-0 on the season with a 25-12, 25-14 win over Cumberland.
Kendall Knop had five aces and also led in kills with eight. Becca Schlechte had 12 assists. Sarah Locke led in digs with eight.
"I'm still waiting to see my team from this summer, said Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We need to set the speed of the game instead of letting the other teams control it. The girls played well enough to win this week but it will hurt us against the stronger teams. Hitting went well tonight along with our defense. Serve receive is one area I would like to see improve."
In the junior varsity match, Stew-Stras won 25-12, 25-17 to improve to 2-0.

Caitlin Sloan had five aces for the winners while Kirsten Buzzard led in kills with seven. Kirby Herrmann had five digs. Leah Kelly led in blocks with three and Kacie Hilt led in assists with 14.
Mulberry Grove won the junior varsity match 25-13, 25-12.
