Eighth-Grade Volleyball Regionals -- March 8 Results

Area teams opened play at eighth-grade volleyball regionals Saturday.

Following are the results:

Class 8-1A Mulberry Grove Regional

Effingham Sacred Heart fell in the opening match of the Mulberry Grove Regional.

The Shamrocks lost to Grayville, 25-23, 25-14.

In the second contest, West Salem won over Pocahontas, 25-13, 25-13.

The lone area team to advance was Newton St. Thomas with a 25-20, 12-25, 25-16 victory over Mulberry Grove.

St. Thomas will now face West Salem at 7 p.m. Tuesday while Ramsey takes on Grayville at 6 p.m.

The winners will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. for the regional championship.

 

Class 8-1A Maritnsville Regional

Findlay Okaw Valley opened this regional with a win over Stewardson-Strasburg. Stew-Stras took the opener 19-25 but Findlay Okaw Valley won the match 25-14, 25-21.

In the second contest, Mattoon St. John's defeated Oakland Lake Crest, 25-17, 25-14.

Windsor then won the third match over Martinsville, 25-17, 25-14.

Sigel St. Michael will meet Findlay Okaw Valley at 5 p.m. Tuesday while Mattoon St. John's and Martinsville meet at 6:30.

 

Class 8-2A Hutsonville Regional

Three of the four area teams lost in opening round play of the Hutsonville Regional Saturday.

In the opening match, Casey-Westfield defeated Effingham St. Anthony, 25-15, 24-26, 25-17.

Oblong then downed Hutsonville, 25-15, 25-16.

In the final match, Albion won over Dieterich, 25-23, 25-19.

In Tuesday play, North Clay, the top seed, will take on Casey-Westfield at 5 p.m. followed by Oblong and Albion at 6 p.m.

 

Class 8-2A Nokomis Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Altamont fell in the opening round of the Nokomis Regional Saturday.

Assumption Central A&M defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16.

CHBC was led by Natalie Tucker, with six aces, seven assists, 11 digs and 10 points and Ralee Martin with five aces

In the second match, Nokomis won over Altamont, 25-14, 25-13.

Altamont was led by Kara Bauer with three aces, three assists, three blocks and four digs. Adelita Ruffner and Sophia Hendrickson had two kills each and Emma Banning had four digs.

The regional continues Tuesday with top-seeded South Central against Assumption Central A&M at 6 p.m. and St. Elmo/Brownstown facing Nokomis at 7.

The winners advance to the title contest Thursday.

Class 8-2A Nokomis Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City -- Lilly, 4 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 3 digs, 3 points; Tucker, 1 kill, 6 aces, 7 assists, 11 digs, 10 points; Martin, 5 kills, 3 aces, 1 assist, 1 block, 4 digs, 9 points; Bennett, 2 aces, 5 digs, 7 points; Zumbahlen, 3 kills, 2 aces, 6 digs, 6 points; Steiner, 1 kill, 2 digs, 3 points

Altamont -- Ruholl, 1 kill, 2 digs; Ruffner, 2 aces, 2 kills, 2 blocks, 2 digs; Banning, 4 digs; Hendrickson, 1 ace, 2 assists, 2 kills,2  digs; Martin,1 dig; Bauer, 3 aces, 3 assists, 1 kill, 3 blocks, 4 digs

 

Class 8-3A Teutopolis Regional

Two of the three area teams fell in the Teutopolis Regional Saturday.

Robinson Nuttall won the opening match over host T-town, 25-16, 25-19.

The second match went to Shelbyville Moulton over Cumberland, 25-1, 25-11.

Red Hill (Bridgeport) downed Lawrenceville Parkview, 25-18, 25-27, 25-23.

In Tuesday evening play, top-seeded Jasper County faces Robinson Nuttall at 5 p.m. followed by Shelbyville Moulton against Red Hill at .6.

The winners will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. for the regional title.

 

Class 8-4A Charleston Regional

Effingham advanced in this regional with a victory Saturday.

The Mustangs, seeded third, downed sixth-seeded Mount Zion, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22.

In the opener, Rochester won over Mattoon, 25-16, 25-21. Charleston then defeated Stephen Decatur, 25-11, 25-9.

Tuesday evening's matches feature Taylorville against Rochester at 4:30 followed by Effingham taking on Charleston at 5:45 p.m.

The winners meet Thursday at 4:30 for the championship.
