Windsor/Stew-Stras Falls Just Short Of Final Four

LEXINGTON -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School's outstanding volleyball season came to a close at the Class 1A Lexington Super-sectional Monday evening.

The Hatchets fell to Cissna Park Co-op in two close-fought battles 25-23, 27-25.

"A tough loss tonight but nothing to hang our heads about," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "I felt nerves played a big part in our play tonight and it took too long to settle down in set one. Then, when we took control of set two and was playing well, Cissna Park turned the table on us and made a run. We tried to stay alive but in the end, they took the win.

"We should be proud of our accomplishments this season and how far we made it after starting the season with such a loss. Edie, Karly, Sienna this season was for you."

Leading the Hatchets in assists was Brinlie Durbin with 18. Kinley Quast had 15 digs and three aces. Myra Friese had nine kills and one solo block. Brooke Schumacher had one solo block and four assists.

Coach Schlechte's crew finished the season with a 31-9 record.

In other super-sectionals, Stockton downed Elgin Harvest Christian Academy, 25-16, 25-21, Hardin Calhoun Co-op won over Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22 and Hartsburg-Emden downed Glasford Illini Bluffs, 25-17, 25-16.

Stockton will meet Hartsburg-Emden at 9 a.m. Friday at the Class 1A State Tournament while Hardin Calhoun Co-op takes on Cissna Park Co-op at 10;30.

The winners advance to the championship match Saturday at 10:30 a.m. while the losers will meet for third place at 9 a.m.

Class 1A Super-Sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg -- Durbin, 1 ace, 1 kill, 18 assists, 4 digs, 3 block assists; M. Friese, 1 ace, 9 kills, 2 digs, 1 solo block; Quast, 3 aces, 1 assist, 15 digs; Hayes, 1 kill, 1 dig, 1 block assist; Wittenberg, 1 kill, 1 solo block, 4 assists; McCormick, 6 killsl, 2 digs; A. Class 2A

In Class 2A, Bloomington Central Catholic defeated Carmi-White County, 25-22, 25-20 while Elmhurst Timothy Christian won over Chicago Latin, 25-23, 25-23 Monday evening.

Breese Mater Dei downed Quincy Notre Dame, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19 and El Paso-Gridley defeated Palos Heights Chicago Christian, 25-27, 25-17, 25-11.

In the Class 2A State Tournament Friday at Normal, Bloomington Central Catholic will face Elmhurst Timothy Christian at noon and Breese Mater Dei faces El Paso-Gridley at 1:30.

The winners advance to the championship match Saturday at 1:55 p.m. while the losers square off for third place at 12:25 p.m.

 

Class 3A

In Class 3A super-sectional action Monday, Chicago DePaul College Prep downed Burbank St. Laurence, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21 while Mahomet-Seymour, an Apollo Conference team, won over Mascoutah, 25-17, 25-27, 25-18. 

Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge defeated Wheaton St. Francis, 10-25, 25-10, 25-17 and Bartonville Limestone downed New Lenox Providence Catholic, 25-23, 25-23.

In the Class 3A State Tournament Friday, Chicago DePaul College Prep faces Mahomet-Seymour at 4 p.m. followed by Bartonville Limestone against Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge at 5:30.

Saturday's finals will feature the losers of Friday's matches playing for third place at 4 p.m. while the winners meet for the championship at 5:30.

 

Class 4A

In Monday's super-sectional action in Class 4A, Huntley downed Palatine Fremd, 25-22, 25-16 while Chicago Marista won over Normal Community West, 28-26, 25-14.

Lockport Township defeated Downers Grove South, 23-25, 25-9, 25-22. Lisle Benet Academy beat Winnetka New Trier, 25-17 25-15.

Huntley will meet Lisle Benet Academy at 7 p.m. Friday while Lockport Township takes on Chicago Marist at 8:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the State championship Saturday at 8:55 p.m. while the losers will play for third place at 7:25 p.m.
