Windsor/Stew-Stras Reaches Volleyball Super-Sectional, Newton Loses

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won the Class 1A Tuscola Sectional.
TUSCOLA -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg is in the Elite Eight.
The Hatchets went up against Heyworth for the championship of the Class 1A Tuscola Volleyball Sectional Thursday evening and came out the winner.
Coach Ronda Schlechte's squad won the opener 25-11 but Tuscola rallied for a 27-25 second set. Windsor/Stew-Stras then easily dispatched Tuscola in the third set 25-15.
"I'm so proud of the girls tonight," said Coach Schlechte. "They played a really good game. It became intense in the second set, but we managed to refocus and take control of set three.
"All our hard work on our serving paid off as Alaira rattled off seven aces. Our blocking was strong and we were able to work several hitters. I'm so proud of Brinlie. She's been working so hard on her setting and tonight she made some amazing out of system sets.
"Monday we will have a rematch with Cissna Park at the Lexington Super-sectional. Come cheer on the Hatchets."
Leading WSS in aces was Alaira Friese with seven. Mya Friese had 15 kills. Brinlie Durbin led in assists with 31. Kinley Quast finished with 13 digs. Samantha Hayes and Ellie Wittenberg had three block assists each.
Windsor/Stew-Stras improved to 31-8 on the season and will now head to super-sectional action
The Hatchets will meet Cissna Park at 6 p.m. Monday at the Lexington Super-sectional. The winner advances to the Class 1A State Tournament Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16.
In other sectional championships, Hardin Calhoun Co-op won over Nokomis 25-18, 25-21 at the South Central Sectional, Cissna Park defeated Lexington 25-23, 25-22, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield won over Edwards County (Albion), 21-25, 25-19, 29-27, Elgin Harvest Christian Academy downed Elgin St. Edwards, 25-15, 19-25, 25-14, Hartsburg-Emden defeated Camp Point Central, 25-17, 25-19, Stockton won over Galena, 25-19, 25-20 and Glasford Illini Bluffs beat Henry-Senachwine, 25-17, 25-21.
In other super-sectionals Monday, Elgin Harvest Christian Academy takes on Stockon at 6 p.m. at Aurora Christian, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield will meet Hardin Calhoun at 6 p.m. at Campbell Hill Trico and Hartsburg-Emden will face Glasford Illini Bluffs at Lewistown, at 7 p.m.

Newton saw its outstanding season come to a close at the Class 2A Fairfield Sectional Thursday.
The Eagles fell to Carmi-White County, 25-19, 25-21.
Allie Hermann led Newton in aces with two and kills with six. Sally Mahaffey had 13 assists. Camryn Martin led in digs with 13. Hydi Bierman and Bailee Frichtl finished with one block each.
The Eagles finished with a 32-7 record.

Class 3A Salem Sectional
Mascoutah defeated Waterloo in the championship of the Salem Sectional.
Mascoutah won 25-19, 25-19.
Mascoutah will meet Mahomet-Seymour at the Effingham Super-sectional Monday at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the Class 3A State Tournament.
