EHS, St. A, Newton, Altamont, Teutopolis Win, EIC Volleyball Tournament Opens

Effingham High School's Bella Austin reached a major milestone Monday evening as the Hearts beat Shelbyville in volleyball action.

Austin finished with seven kills as the Hearts won 25-13, 25-21. Those kills helped Austin reach her 1,000th kill.

The Hearts' Austin and Mckenzie Love finished with seven kills each. Berkley Pullen, Hanna Thompson, Korina Hecht and Austin served up one ace each. Pullen led in assists with 12 and Thompson added 10.

Leading in blocks with one each were Reaghan Delong, Austin and Love. Austin also led in digs with seven.

Coach Laurie Bohnhoff's crew are now 27-7 on the season.

The Hearts also claimed the junior varsity victory, 25-16, 25-17 and now sports a 24-3 record.

In freshman/sophomore play, the two teams split. Shelbyville won the opener 25-21 and Effingham took the second set 25-22.

EHS is back in action tonight at Mattoon.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony went two sets in downing Richland County, Olney Monday evening 25-19, 25-11.

Lilly Gannaway led the Bulldogs in digs with five. Cara Hatton finished with six kills. Nancy Ruholl had two blocked shots. Addi Nuxoll led in aces with two. Madelyn Gilmore led in assists with 10.

The Bulldogs improved their record to 19-9 on the season and won't return to action until Saturday at the Mahomet-Seymour Invitational.

At Effingham

At Newton

Newton played host to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and sent the Hatchets home with a loss Monday evening.

The Eagles won 25-16, 25-17 to improve to 28-6 on the season.

Hydi Bierman led Newton with seven kills and one block. Allie Hermann led in digs with eight, aces with two and had one block. Bailee Frichtl also had one block. Sally Mahaffey had 20 assists.

Newton will celebrate Senior Night Thursday against Paris with a freshman/sophomore match at five, junior varsity at six and varsity to follow.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Mya Friese with five kills, Brinlie Durbin with 13 assists, Kinley Quast with 12 digs and Ellie Wittenberg with three block assists.

"I was hoping to use the competition tonight to give us a good push before regionals," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Newton always has a very strong defensive team which would have shown us where to tweak a few things. We didn't come ready to play tonight so that didn't work."

The Hatchets fall to 26-8 on the season and are back in action tonight hosting Tuscola at Windsor.

Newton also captured the junior varsity match, 23-25, 25-16, 15-2 . Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 8-10.

In a freshman/sophomore match, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-15, 25-15 and is 5-6-8.

Altamont handed Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran a loss in two sets, 25-15, 25-15 Monday evening.

Altamont's Grace Lemke led the way in kills with six and aces with two. Riley Rippetoe also had two aces. Laila Hankins led the way in digs with 21 and had two blocked shots. Makaylee Splechter led in assists with 23.

Teutopolis swept through varsity, junior varsity and freshman/sophomore action over Cumberland Monday.

The Wooden Shoes won the varsity contest, 25-20, 25-19 and is now 19-14 on the season.

Claresa Ruholl led the Shoes in digs with 19 and had her 1,000th career dig. Earlier in the year, Ruholl broke the record for most digs in a career of 781 set by Savannah Grimes in 2018.

Gabby Tegeler had seven kills. Sara Zumbahlen led in assists with 15. Olivia Cates had 12 points and three aces.

Cumberland was led by Suzy Fritts and Alysa Dittamore with five assists each, Dittamore with three kills and two blocks, Mia Holsapple with two blocks, Fritts with one ace and MacKenzie Claybaugh with 11 digs.

The Wooden Shoes won the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-16 and is now 16-3 on the season.

The T-town freshmen won 26-15, 25-13 and has a 24-6-3 record.

The Shoes are back in action tonight at Robinson.

At St. Elmo

The Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament got underway Monday at St. Elmo.

In Pool A, St. Elmo/Brownstown defeated Ramsey, 27-25, 25-13. The Eagles were led by Cordelia Lytle with four aces, 13 points and six digs. Presley Williams led in kills with 11. Addie Sasse had 15 assists. Alivia Claycomb had one blocked shot.

The second match went to Ramsey over Mulberry Grove, 13-25, 27-25, 25-18.

St. Elmo/Brownstown then finished out the evening with a victory over Mulberry Grove, 25-21, 25-13.

Lytle, Williams, Mya Barker and Peyton Barker had one ace each. Williams and P. Barker had seven kills each. Sasse led in assists with 16. M.Barker had 16 digs.

Tonight's matches include Patoka vs. Martinsville at 5:30 p.m., Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City vs. Martinsville at 6:30 and Patoka against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7:30.
