EHS Captures Edwards Co. VB Crown, T-town Competes At Champaign

The Hearts finished first at the Edwards County (Albion) Volleyball Tournament.

ALBION -- Effingham High School came out the champions of the Edwards County (Albion) Volleyball Tournament during the weekend.

The Hearts opened with a victory over Robinson, 25-12, 25-10 then downed Oblong, 25-19, 25-17.

EHS beat the host squad, losing the opening set 25-20 but coming back for 25-15, 15-7 tallies.

The Hearts then lost to Carmi 25-18, 18-25, 20-18 but defeated Norris City-Omaha-Enfield 25-23, 25-23.

There was a three-way tie between Carmi, NCOE and Effingham but the Hearts finished with first place.

Bella Austin and Sidney Donaldson were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Newton also competed in the tournament. In pool play, the Eagles won their opener over Charleston 25-7, 25-13 but fell to Carmi-White County 25-23, 25-13.

In the Silver Division, Newton beat Mount Carmel, 25-22, 25-13 and won over Oblong 26-24, 25-11. The Eagles then downed Carterville 25-13, 25-10 to win the Silver Division.

At Champaign

Teutopolis competed in the Champaign St. Thomas More Invitational Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes opened with a loss to Pontiac 25-16, 26-24. The Shoes then fell to St. Thomas More, 26-24, 25-16.

T-town came back to beat Paxton-Buckley-Loda 25-16, 25-12 before dropping another loss, this one to Monticello, 25-20, 25-18. T-town finished out with a victory over Mount Pulaski, 25-16, 25-13.

"Today we participated in the Morgan Buerkett Memorial Tournament," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "Unfortunately we fell into a familiar pattern, playing solid volleyball in one set and then completely unraveling in the second. We dropped both our pool play matches and fell into the consolation bracket where we won two and lost one to finish the day with a 2-3 record.

"Monday night is Senior night against Cumberland and we finish the regular season Tuesday ninth at Robinson. We are 18-14 on the season."
