Windsor/Stew-Stras Opens NTC Tourney With Two Wins, Area Volleyball Roundup

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School opened the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament with two victories in Pool A at the Enlow Center Thursday evening.

The Hatchets defeated Altamont, 25-17, 25-17 in the opening match. Brinlie Durbin led the team in assists with 25. Kinley Quast had 13 digs. Mya Friese led in kills with nine while Alaira Friese had three aces. Brooke Schumacher led in block assists with six.

Altamont was led by Makaylee Splechter with nine digs, eight assists and two aces and Riley Rippetoe with four kills and one block. Laila Hankins also had one block.

In the second match, North Clay defeated Altamont, 25-20, 25-20.

Altamont's Splechter led in aces with three, kills with two, digs with six and assists with 12. Rippetoe also had two kills

The third match went to Windsor/Stew-Stras over North Clay, 25-5, 25-14.

M. Friese and A. Friese had three aces each. M. Friese led in kills with 10 and had one solo block. Durbin had 17 assists and five digs. Quast also had five digs. Schumacher had four block assists.

"We struggled to find our rhythm against Altamont but looked more like our team with North Clay," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "It's getting too late in the season to be inconsistent, so hopefully, they'll be full force on Saturday."

The Hatchets are now 24-7 on the season and will return to action Saturday in the Gold Flight.

The tournament continues tonight at the Enlow Center. St. Anthony and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meet at 5 p.m. CHBC will then take on Dieterich at 6. St. Anthony and Dieterich square off at 7.

Three matches also will be contested tonight at Goff Gym. South Central meets Neoga at 5 followed by Neoga against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 6. South Central and St. Elmo/Brownstown square off at 7.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday at the Enlow Center. The Bronze Pool will play beginning at 9 a.m., the Silver Pool at 1 p.m. and the Gold Pool at 5 p.m.

At Effingham

Effingham High School continues to put together victories.

EHS defeated Mahomet-Seymour in action Thursday evening, 25-19, 27-25 to improve to 22-6 on the season.

Avery Wolfe led in aces with two. Bella Austin had  nine kills. Hanna Thompson had 11 asists. Bria Beals led in blocks with two. Alyssa Martin had eight digs.

The Hearts also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-15 to improve to 20-3. The JV team will be back in action Saturday at the Maroa-Forsyth Junior Varsity Tournament.

Mahomet-Seymour won the freshman/sophomore contest, 21-11, 21-6. EHS dropped to 5-12.

Cumberland hosted Unity Christian and fell in both varsity and junior varsity contests Thursday.

The Pirates lost 25-19, 25-15 in the varsity match. Alysa Dittamore led the Pirates in kills with five, blocks with one and aces with one. Also having one block were MacKenzie Claybaugh, Mia Holsapple and Hannah Shoemaker. Holsapple also had one ace. Leah Gray had seven digs and Suzy Fritts led in assists with six.

Unity Christian also captured the junior varsity contest, 25-6, 25-11. The Pirates fell to 5-11.
