Effingham Wins Pana Tourney Title, NTC Tourney Schedule Released

Effingham High School won the Pana Volleyball Tournament.

PANA -- Effingham High School came out the champions of the Pana Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

 

The Hearts opened with a 25-11, 25-10 win over Altamont then won over Okaw Valley 25-12, 25-15. The Hearts downed host Pana 25-21, 25-18 and won over Shelbyville 25-18, 22-25, 15-10. EHS finished with a win over Windsor/Stewarsdon-Strasburg 25-20, 29-27 for the championship.

McKenzie Love and Bella Austin were named to the All-Tournament Team.

EHS was led by Austin with 54 total kills for the five matches. McKenzie Love led in blocks with seven. Bria Beals finished with 11 aces. Hannah Thompson led in assists with 53 while Berkley Pullen had 52. Alyssa Martin led in digs with 21.

The Hearts are now 20-6 on the season.

Windsor/Stew-Stras captured a victory over East Alton/Wood River 25-22, 25-16. The Hatchets defeated Sullivan, 25-19, 25-16

In pool play, WSS won over Shelbyville 26-24, 22-25, 16-14. In a crossover match, the Hatchets beat Pana 25-20, 26-24.

In the championship match, Windsor/Stew-Stras fell to Effingham, 25-20, 29-27.

Brinlie Durbin led the team in assists with a total of 123 in the five matches. She also led in aces with 13. Kinley Quast led the team in digs with a total of 93. Myra Friese had 50 kills. Ellie Wittenberg led in block assists with 10. Brooke Schumacher had two blocks.

"Today was a long day of volleyball," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Besides bringing home second place, Kinley Quast was named Most Valuable Player and Alaira Friese was named to the All-Tournament team. We had many challenges to work through today but we came out on top. We battled with Effinghan and came up a tad short pushing to a third set. It was a great game though."

National Trail Conference Tournament

The pairings were released for the National Trail Conference Tournament to be held at Effingham St. Anthony's Enlow Center and Goff Gym.

The tourney begins Thursday. In Pool A are Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, North Clay (Louisville) and Altamont. In Pool B are St. Anthony, Dieterich and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. In Pool C are South Central, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Neoga.

 The tournament continues Friday and will end Saturday with the finals beginning at 9 a.m.

Teutopolis won the Olney Freshman Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes beat Robinson 25-19, 25-11, won over Flora 25-4, 25-11 and downed Olney 25-9, 25-18.

The Shoes have a 21-6 record.
