Trinity Lutheran Wins St. Thomas Tourney, Junior High Volleyball Jan. 19-20

Stewardson Trinity Lutheran won the Newton St. Thomas Tournament Saturday. NEWTON -- Stewardson Trinity Lutheran won the championship of the Newton St. Thomas Seventh-Grade Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

Six teams competing werei St. Anthony, Newton St. Thomas, Edwards County (Albion), Paris Cresttwood, Dieterich and Stewardson Trinity Lutheran.

"The girls played greta," said Trinity Lutheran Coach Tammy Manhart. "They work very well as a team. I am very proud of them."

Trinity Lutheran defeated Dieterich 25-19, 25-12 and won over Paris Crestwood 25-13, 25-14. Lutheran then defeated Newton St. Thomas, 25-16, 25-14.

Gia Bostedo led the team in points with 25, aces with 11 and assists with 26. Lydia Weaver had seven kills. Maddy Manhart and Izzy Manhart had five digs each.

St. Anthony competed in the tournament.

The Bullpups fell to Newton St. Thomas in the first match, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9.

Rachell Emmerich led in kills with three. Carly Budde and Mallory Littz had four aces each.

St. Anthony then fell in the second match to Dieterich, 25-21, 25-20.

St. Anthony was led by Budde with two kills and Nora Niebrugge and Littz with three aces each.

At Toledo

Effingham St. Anthony and Cumberland split seventh- and eighth-grade vollyeball wins Friday.

In the eighth-grade contest, Cumberland won the opening set 27-25 but St. Anthony came back to take the match, 25-18, 25-13.

Alexa Wagner led the Bullpups in kills with seven. Madelyn Gilmore had nine assists and five aces. Sylvie Schumacher led in blocks with two. 
In the seventh-grade contest, Cumberland won the opener 25-20. St. Anthony came back for the second set 26-24, but Cumberland won the match 27-25.

Sigel St. Michael came calling and picked up two victories over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Friday.

St. Michael was a 25-3, 25-11 winner in the seventh-grade match.

CHBC was led by Lyric Bennett with two points and one ace, Harper Lilly with one kill and Raylee Martin, Natalie Tucker and Sophie Zumbahlen with one ace each.

In the eighth-grade match, the Sharpshooters were 25-17, 25-11 winners.

CHBC was led by Adilynn Nowitzke with four points, one ace and one dig, Jayla Arnett and Brylie Prater with one ace each. Arnett had three assists. Carissa Wakefield led in kills with four, blocks with two and digs with one. Ethel Stuckemeyer had two blocks and one dig and Zoe Sarver had one dig.
