Altamont, T-town, C'land, Newton Claim Volleyball Regional Openers

ST. ELMO -- Altamont won the opening match in the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Volleyball Regional Monday evening.

The Indians handed host St. Elmo/Brownstown a 25-18 opening set loss. SEB came back to win the second set, 25-19. But Altamont pulled out the match, 25-14.

Altamont was led by Maya Moore with five aces, Grace Lemke with nine kills, Brianna Grunloh with seven digs, Peyton Osteen with 24 assists and Della Berg with two blocked shots.

SEB was led by Anna Stine and Peyton Garrard with two aces each. Stine had 14 points while Garrard finished with 12. Addie Sasse and Abbi Ledbetter led in kills with five each. Avree Strobel had one blocked shot. Kinley Carson led in assists with 10. Garrard had 11 digs.

Altamont advances to face No. 2 North Clay/Clay City at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

In tonight's action at St. Elmo, No. 3 Effingham St. Anthony takes on No. 13 Patoka Co-op at 6 followed by No. 5 South Central against No. 11 Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7.

Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

Dieterich saw its season come to an end against Bethany Okaw Valley Monday evening.

Dieterich claimed the opener 26-24 but Bethany Okaw Valley came back with 25-19, 25-16 scores for the match win.

Marli Michl led Dieterich in kills with 13 while Ruby Westendorf had three blocked shots. Olivia Brummer led in digs with 21.

Bethany Okaw Valley advances to face No. 2 Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 6 p.m.  Wednesday.

Tonight's matches include No. 3 Chrisman against No. 12 Tuscola at 6 and No. 11 Neoga facing No. 6 Arcola at 7.

 

Class 2A McLeansboro Hamilton County Regional

Teutopolis defeated Flora in opening round play of the McLeansboro Regional Monday.

The Wooden Shoes won 25-2, 25-11. Sara Niemerg and TaNeal Einhorn led in kills with six each. Niemerg had one blocked shot while Einhorn led in aces with three. Madison Miller had one block. Sara Zumbahlen led in assists with eight. Claresa Ruholl had five digs. Summer Wall had three aces.

T-town is immediately back in action tonight against top-seeded Fairfield at 6:30 p.m. In the second match, No. 4 McLeansboro Hamilton County takes on No. 5 Mount Carmel at 7:30.

Class 2A McLeansboro Hamilton County Regional

Class 2A Lawrenceville Regional

Cumberland and Newton both claimed opening round victories in the Lawrenceville Regional Monday.

Lawrenceville opened with a 25-14 win over Cumberland but the Pirates scrambled back to take the second set, 26-24. Cumberland then won the match, 25-18.

The Pirates were led by Alyssa  Dittamore with seven assists and Three aces, Katelyn Shoemaker with five kills, Charlee Thornton with four blocks and Suzy Fritts with 13 digs. 

Newton downed Marshall in two sets, 25-8, 25-13.

The Eagles were led by Mahaffey with four aces, Schafer with 12 assists, Kessler with one block and Bennett with eight digs.

Newton is now 22-14 on the season and will meet Robinson at 7 p.m. today following Cumberland against No. 2 Carmi-White County at 6 p.m.

Class 2A Lawrenceville Regional

Cumberland -- Yaw, 5 assists, 1 ace, 6 digs; Matteson, 1 ace, 2 digs; Fritts, 1 ace, 13 digs; Haarman, 11 digs; K. Shoemaker, 5 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs; H. Class 3A Effingham Regional

Charleston opened the Effingham Regional with a victory over Mattoon Monday.

The Trojans won 25-19, 25-22 and advance to meet No. 2 Effingham today at 6 p.m. followed by No. 3 Bethalto Civic Memorial against No. 6 Richland County (Olney) at 7.

The winners advance to the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
