Effingham St. Anthony fell to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in the opening set of high school volleyball action Tuesday, 25-20.

But the Bulldogs came storming back with a 27-25 second set and then won the match with a 25-18 final tally.

St. Anthony's Andrea Rudolphi pounded down eight kills while Abbi Hatton had seven. Addi Nuxoll came up with five aces. Cara Hatton had four blocks. Addie Wernsing finished with 12 assists and Maddie Kibler had 22 digs.

"Tonight was a good wakeup call," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "The girls know how to play but they let the mental side of volleyball beat them. On top of starting the night with Ella having a stiff neck, our passers did not make things easy for her. We also had multiple missed serves along with hitting errors. Just a bad night. We will learn from and turn the page."

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Halle Moomaw with four aces, one solo block and one block assist, Gabby Vonderheide with 14 kills, Ella Kinkelaar with 24 assists and Kinley Quast with 17 digs.

The Hatchets drop to 7-1 in the National Trail Conference, 19-5 overall.

In junior varsity play, St. Anthony also claimed a victory, 25-14, 25-20. It was the first loss for WSS, which drops to 16-1.

The Bulldogs also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-14, 25-17. WSS dropped to 5-4-9.

At St. Elmo

Altamont was a winner over St. Elmo/Brownstown in National Trail Conference action Tuesday.

The Indians won 25-18, 25-15.

Brianna Grunloh had nine digs and one ace for the winners. Grace Lemke and Kylie Osteen had five kills each. K. Osteen had one blocked shot. Peyton Osteen led in assists with eight. 

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Anne Stine and Abbi Ledbetter with one ace each, Ledbetter led in points with six. Addie Sasse with three kills and four assists and Peyton Garrard with 10 digs.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis played host to Vandalia and swept through all three matches Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes captured the varsity match, 25-21, 25-12 and evened its record at 13-13.

"Sara Niemerg's alert solo block of a setter attack in the first set followed by Paige Swingler's tape-touching ace were keys," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "We played well for about a set and a half. We had a run of errors in the first set, but corrected ourselves at 19-19 and then we were fine. It was tough because we had a fluke injury so we weren't able to practice as efficiently as we'd like. I'm going to start bubble wrapping players for safety at this point."

Emma Deters had five kills and three aces for the Shoes. Sara Niemerg led in blocks with two. Molly Pals had three aces, Sara Zumbahlen led in assists with 16. Claresa Ruholl had 11 digs.

"TaNeal Einhorn on Friday moved into sixth place on the career block list with 99, passing Erica Michels," said Dietz. "Emma Deters moved into second on the career ace list with 90, passing Macy Michels. On Thursday, Sara Zumbahlen moved into third for career assists, passing Kate Volk."

In junior varsity action, T-town was a 25-22, 25-15 winner and is 19-5. Olivia Cates had four aces and 10 digs while Lily Smith had eight assists. Madison Miller and Gabby Tegeler had five kills each. Elise Pals had three blocks. Brittany Swingler also had four aces.

The Wooden Shoe freshman squad won 25-20, 25-16 and is 14-6.

At Teutopolis

At Wayne City

North Clay/Clay City handed Wayne City a non-conference loss Tuesday.

The Cardinals won 25-12, 25-21 to improve to 23-4 on the season.

Wayne City was a winner in junior varsity play, 25-11, 25-21.

North Clay/Clay City is back in action Thursday against Effingham St. Anthony.

 

At Newton

Newton fell in varsity action to Mount Carmel Tuesday. The Eagles won the opener 25-12 but Mount Carmel came back to take 25-15, 25-21 set wins for the match.

Schafer led in assists with 15, digs with 14 and kills with eight. Frichtl had two blocked shots.

The Eagles won the junior varsity match. They lost the opener 25-16 but came back with 25-7, 15-12 scores for the match.

Newton also claimed the freshman match, 25-13, 25-20.

At Argenta

Cumberland advanced in consolation bracket play at the Little Prairie Conference Tournament Tuesday.

Cumberland downed Arcola, 25-23, 25-20. In the other consolation contest, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond won over Argenta-Oreana, 25-16, 25-20.

Cumberland will now meet Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond at 5 p.m. Thursday in the consolation championship at the high school gym.

In other matches Tuesday in winner bracket play, Unity Christian won over Villa Grove, 25-19, 25-21 and Cerro Gordo-Bement downed Heritage, 25-23, 25-23.

Unity Christian and Cerro Gordo-Bement meet Thursday at 7 p.m. for the championship while Villa Grove and Heritage will play each other at 6 p.m. for third place.

Tonight's matches feature Okaw valley against Blue Ridge at 6 p.m. in the high school gym and Sullivan taking on Tri-County at 6 p.m. in the junior high gym. The winners will advance to play for seventh place at 7 p.m. in the high school gym while the losers will meet for ninth place at 7 p.m. in the junior high gym.
