WSS Finishes Second At Champaign Central VB Tourney

CHAMPAIGN -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School finished in second place at the Champaign Central September Fest Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

 

The Hatchets opened with a 25-10, 25-18 victory over Champaign Central.

Halle Moomaw and Kinley Quast had three aces each. Moomaw led in kills with 10. Ella Kinkelaar had 24 assists. Quast led in digs with 10. Moomaw and Brinlie Durbin had one block assist each.

WSS then went three sets to beat Rock Bridge, 18-25, 25-23, 15-9.

Moomaw had 14 kills while Kinkelaar finished with 30 assists. Quast had 16 digs. Moomaw finished with one solo block and seven block assists. Ellie Wittenberg had one solo block.

The Hatchets downed Washington, 25-18, 25-21.

Vonderheide and Moomaw had 12 kills each. Kinkelaar led in aces with four and assists with 26. Quast had 12 digs. Moomaw had two block assists.

WSS then won over Champaign St. Thomas More, 25-13, 25-22.

Quast and Eident had three aces each. Moomaw tallied 11 kills. Kinkelaar had 17 assists. Moomaw had one solo block and three block assists.

In the final contest, WSS fell to Oswego, 25-20, 17-25, 25-17 to finish second.

Kinkelaar had 30 assists, Vonderheide eight digs and one solo block, Moomaw, 16 kills, 1 one solo block and one block assist and Quast and Eident with three aces each. Wittenberg added one solo block and one block assist and Vonderheide had one solo block.

"I knew if we didn't push to get to the right side of the bracket, we wouldn't see the teams I wanted to see," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "The girls listened and made it happen. It wasn't always pretty but they played hard. I'm really proud of them for pulling off second place and taking Oswego to three sets. We put up a good fight."

The Hatchets are now 15-4 on the season and back in action tonight at Shelbyville.

St. Elmo/Brownstown placed fourth at the Webber Township (Bluford) Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

The squad went 1-2. They fell to Cobden, 25-16, 25-19 and Webber Township, 25-19, 18-25, 15-8. The team then won over Galatia, 25-22, 25-10.

Abbi Ledbetter and Peyton Garrard made the All-Tournament Team.
