Cerro Gordo Wins Altamont Tourney; Area Volleyball Roundup

ALTAMONT -- Cerro Gordo came out the champion of the Altamont Varsity Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

In opening round play, Altamont defeated Vandalia, 25-15, 25-14; Nokomis defeated Heritage, 21-12, 21-12 and then split with Altamont, 21-10, 16-21; Vandalia and Heritage split with Heritage winning 21-16 and then Vandalia winning 21-17; Altamont split with Nokomis with Altamont falling in the openr 21-15 but coming back to win 25-23; Cumberland beat Greenville, 21-14, 21-14; Cerro Gordo won over Armstong 21-11, 21-8; Armstrong defeated Greenville 21-9, 21-15; Cerro Gordo downed Cumberland 21-9, 21-9 and won over Greenville, 21-6, 21-7 and Armstrong handed Cumberland a 21-9, 21-15 loss.

In Pool A, Nokomis finished with a 5-1 record followed by Altamont 4-2, Heritage 2-4 and Vanda;ia 1-5.

In Pool B, Cerro Gordo had a 6-0 record followed by Armstrong 4-2, Cumberland 2-4 and Greenville 0-6.

In the finals, Nokomis beat Armstrong 25-14, 25-8; Cerro Gordo won over Altamont, 25-17, 25-11; Altamont downed Armstrong 25-13, 22-25, 15-6 and Cerro Gordo won the championship, beating Nokomis, 25-12, 17-25, 15-9.

Vandalia beat Cumberland, 25-20, 25-19; Heritage downed Greenville 25-13, 21-25, 15-8; Cumberland beat Greenville, 25-22, 25-22 and Heritage won over Vandalia, 25-12, 20-25, 15-11.

Cerro Gordo captured first followed by Nokomis, Altamont, Armstrong, Heritage, Vandalia, Cumberland and Greenville.

At Olney

Effingham St. Anthony finished 4-1 in the Richland County Tournament at Olney Saturday.

The Bulldogs beat Palestine-Hutsonvile, 25-16, 25-15; Tolono Unity 25-16, 22-25, 15-12; Carterville, 25-12, 25-12; and Edwards County (Albion), 27-25, 19-25, 15-13. St. Anthony lost to Fairfield, 27-25, 25-20.

Abbi Hatton earned All-Tournament honors.

The Bulldogs are 5-2 on the season.

Newton lost in pool play to Edwards County, 25-8, 17-25, 15-10 and Mount Zion, 25-20, 19-25, 13-13.

In the Bronze Flight, the Eagles won all three matches downing South Central, 25-19, 25-19; Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 25-13, 25-11 and Palestine-Hutsonville, 25-12, 25-19 to finish 3-2.

South Central went 1-4 at the tournament. The Cougars lost to Mount Carmel, 25-22, 25-20, 15-8 and Carterville 25-15, 25-11 in pool play.

In the Bronze Flight, South Central downed Hutsonville/Palestine, 25-22, 14-25, 15-10 then fell to Newton 25-18, 25-19 and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 20-25, 25-21, 15-10.

South Central is 4-5 on the season.

Richland County Tournament

At Champaign

Effingham finished second in the Champaign Central Junior Varsity Tournament Saturday.

The Hearts beat Lexington 23-25, 25-18, 15-9 and Rantoul, 25-17, 25-23. They fell to Peoria Notre Dame, 25-14, 25-21.
