Effingham Claims Pink Out Match Over St. A, Volleyball Roundup

Effingham captured the annual Pink Out volleyball match in the Volley for a Cure 2023 Tuesday evening at St. Anthony's Enlow Center. The match was heard on 979 XFM.

The Hearts beat St. Anthony in two sets, 25-21, 25-16.  Leading the way for EHS were Bella Austin with four kills and five aces, Bria Beals with four kills and nine digs, Hannah Thompson with 10 assists and Sidney Donaldson with four kills and four blocks.

Leading St. Anthony were Abbi Hatton and Cara Hatton with four kills each. A. Hatton had three aces and 10 digs along with two block assists. C. Hatton had a solo block and two block assists. Addi Wernsing led in assists with nine. Maddie Kibler had one solo block.

Effingham was also a winner in the junior varsity match. St. Anthony took the opener 27-25 but the Hearts came back 25-13, 25-17.

The Hearts were led by Averie Wolfe with 26 digs, Pullen with 10 assists, Reaghan Delong with eight kills, Layni Frey with six aces asnd Mckenzie Love with three blocks.

The money raised at the Pink Out matches will go to Crossroads Cancer Center where it will be used to provide patients with gas cards to help with transporation, food and drink while receiving chemotherapy, helping patients get wigs and head wraps for those who have lost their hair and treatments for those who financially cannot afford it.

St. Anthony -- no statistics

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg tallied a win over Dieterich in two sets, 25-16, 25-12.

"It was nice to see Dieterich bring some sparkle tonight and took some good plays from us," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "It made us refocus and play our game. We still have a few things to iron out but it's still early in the season."

The Hatchets were led by Ella Kinkelaar with 21 assists, 3 block assists and four aces, Halle Moomaw with nine kills and Kinley Quast with seven digs.

Olivia Brummer led Dieterich with one ace, seven digs and two kills. Ruby Westendorf had two kills and three blocks. Ella Kreke led in assists with five. Marli Michl had one ace and seven digs.

In junior varsity play, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-13, 25-16. Brinlie Durbin had six assists, Mya Friese five aces and seven kills and Avery Starwalt eight digs.

Dieterich was led by Kinli Michl with seven digs and four kills and Haezel Niemeyer with four assists.

The Hatchets also claimed freshman/sophomore competition, 25-9, 25-9.

At Newton

Newton High School improved to 3-4 on the season with a victory over Altamont.

The Eagles won the varsity match, 25-18, 25-16. Zumbahlen led in kills with nine while Schafer had eight assists, Bennett four aces, Stanley two blocks and Frichtl five digs.

Altamont was led by Peyton Osteen and Delia Berg with one ace each. Riley Rippetoe had five kills. Libby Reardon led in digs with seven. P. Osteen had eight assists and one block. Grace Lemke and Kylie Osteen had one block each.

Newton also won the junior varsty match, 25-23, 25-23 and a freshman contest, 25-18, 28-26.

At  Marshall

Teutopolis captured both the junior varsity and varsity matches over Marshall Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes won the varsity match in two sets, 25-13, 25-20 to improve to 6-3 on the season.

"Marshall staged a rally in the middle of the second set, but Emma Deters went on her first long serving run of the year to open the lead again," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "The Shoes held it the rest of the way.

"I thought we had a solid practice yesterday and worked on some of the stuff we had revealed as weaknesses over the weekend. For the most part, we were better at those things tonight. That meant we limited errors and it's easier to win when you do that."

Emma Deters led the Shoes in kills with six and blocks with two. TaNeal Einhorn had five aces. Sara Zumbahlen led in assists with eight. Claresa Ruholl and Summer Wall had eight digs each.

In junior varsity action, T-town was a 22-25, 25-13, 25-9 winner and is now 3-1.

Elise Pals had four blocks, Olivia Cates five digs, Kaley Jordan nine aces and nine assists, Madison Miller six kills and Brittany Swingler nine assists for the junior varsity.

At Marshall

Charleston handed Cumberland a loss in varsity competition Tuesday.

The Trojans won 25-22, 29-27. Cumberland was led by Megan Yaw with six assists, Suzy Fritts with seven digs, Katelyn Shoemaker with five blocks and three aces and Hannah Shoemaker and Charlee Thornton with three kills each.

In the junior varsity match, Cumberland was a winner, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11 to improve to 2-1.
