Newton, N. Clay, T-town Compete In Fairfield VB Tourney

FAIRFIELD -- North Clay/Clay City, Newton and Teutopolis competed in the Fairfield Lady Mule KO Volleyball Classic during the weekend.

North Clay/Clay City defeated Gallatin County, 25-8, 25-19. The squad then fell to Newton, 25-18, 25-13.

NC/CC downed Chester 25-21, 25-22 and won over Teutopolis 25-21, 25-23. The Cardinals then downed Mount Carmel 25-18, 25-18 to win the Silver Pool.

Senior Morgan Hance was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Newton placed fourth in the Gold Pool.

The Eagles won over North Clay 25-17, 25-13 then defeated Gallatin County 25-15, 25-14. Chester downed Newton 12-25, 25-21, 15-8.

In the Gold bracket, Newton fell to Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12 and lost to North Possey 25-18, 25-17 to finish fourth.

Bennett led in aces with eight. Schafer had 23 kills and 40 assists. Kessler had five blocks. Bennett led in digs with 27.

Teutopolis won its first two matches over Cisne, 23-25, 26-24, 15-9 and Lawrenceville, 25-14, 25-9. But the Wooden Shoes fell in the next three contests. North Clay won 25-21, 25-23 while Norris City-Omaha-Enfield won 25-19, 25-12 while Rombins won 26-24, 23-25, 15-6.

"We did better than last year, but we're capable of better," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. The win over Cisne was the 200th of his high school career with 743 total. "We just had too many people sick. A couple were sick yesterday, one got sick today and another didn't come with us because of the flu. When you take that into account, doing better than last year (making the Silver flight) is a nice job. We just need to get people hydrated and healthy."

Claresa Ruholl led in digs with 42. Sara Niemerg had 24 kills. TaNeal Einhorn led in blocks with 12 and Danielle Probst led in assists with 39.
