Effingham St. Anthony played host to South Central as two National Trail Conference teams clashed Thursday evening in high school volleyball action.

The Bulldogs were winners in two sets, 25-22, 25-21.

Andrea Rudolphi led the Bulldogs in kills with nine. Addie Wernsing had 14 assists and three aces. Leading in digs was Addi Nuxoll with eight. Rudolphi and Anna Niemeyer had two solo blocks each.

The Cougars were led by Brooke Cowger with six kills and three blocked shots. Emma Runge had six digs while Megan Yates led in assists with six. Mya Schaal had the lone ace for the Cougars who dropped to 1-1 on the season. South Central will be back in action Monday hosting Woodlawn.

The Bulldogs also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-13, 19-25, 25-16 and had the sweep on the evening by winning the freshman/sophomore match, 25-15, 25-18.

At Effingham

Effingham went three sets before downing Newton in Thursday evening competition.

The Hearts won the opener 25-14 but Newton came back with a 25-16 win. EHS then pulled out the match with a 25-15 count.

Hannah Thompson led EHS in two categories. Thompson had 16 assists and three aces. Bella Austin led in kills with 10. Sidney Donaldson had two blocked shots. Bria Beals led in digs with 16.

"In the first and third games we did a nice job of running offense and hitting aggressively," said EHS Coach Laurie Bohnhoff. :We covered our hitters and kept attacking. In the second game, Newton hit and blocked really well. Our blockers were getting touches but couldn't catch up to their quick offense. Newton's libero wouldn't let anything drop and made us work for every kill.

"In game three, Newton came out and took the lead. I felt like Hannah Thompson's serving gave us a lot of momentum and we started playing confident. It was a good win. Newton will have a good record this year."

Newton was led by Stanley with two aces while Schafer led in kills with nine. Mahaffey was the assist leader with 15. Kessler had two blocked shots while Bennett had 10 digs. The Eagles are back in action Saturday at the Fairfield Tournament.

The Hearts also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-17. Leading the way were McKenzie Love with six kills, Berkley Pullen with seven assists, Cami Burgholzer with three aces and Alyssa Martin with nine digs.

Effingham also won the freshman/sophomore match, 21-11, 12-21, 15-10.

EHS is back in action Tuesday at the St. Anthony Pinkout.

St. Elmo/Brownstown handed Vandalia  loss in Thursday action.

SEB won the opener 25-22 before Vandalia took the second set, 25-19. BSE then won the match, 25-23.

Addie Sasse led in points with 19, blocked shots with one and assists with 10. Peyton Garrard had four aces. Jayna Ireland led in kills with five.

WindsorStewardson-Strasburg captured the varsity win over Moweaqua Central A&M Thursday.

The Hatchets won 25-11, 25-6. Ella Kinkelaar led the way in assists with 16 and had four digs. Halle Moomaw led in aces with seven and had one block assist. Samantha Hayes led in kills with eight. Gabby Vonderheide and Kinley Quast led in digs with four each. Ellie Wittenberg had one solo block. Alaira Friese had one block assist.

The Hatchets also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-7. Mya Friese led in aces with four, kills with nine and digs with six. Kendra Hayes had nine assists.

WSS split the freshman contest, 25-20, 20-25.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City went three sets before downing Dieterich in Thursday evening action.

The Bobcats won the opener 25-23 before Dieterich came back with a 25-16 victory. CHBC then won the match, 25-21.

Kyleigh Wallace led the winners in kills with seven. Macee Rodman had six aces and led in digs with 12. Marissa Summers led in assists with 13. Karlee Smith had four blocked shots.

Dieterich was led by Olivia Brummer with 14 kills and three aces, Ruby Westendorf with three aces, Ella Kreke with 20 assists, Marli Michl with 14 digs and two blocks and Bailey Brummer with three aces.

CHBC won the junior varsity match, 25-15, 25-17. The two teams split the freshman/sophomore matches. CHBC won 25-16 and Dieterich was a 25-23 winner.

Dieterich was led in junior varsity play by Peyton Blackwell with two aces, Mallory Bierman with five digs and Kinli Michl with five kills.

Cumberland handed Hutsonville/Palestine a loss Thursday.

The Pirates won 25-21, 25-16. Megan Yaw led the way in assists for the winners with 11. Katelyn Shoemaker had five kills and one blocked shot. Hannah Shoemaker and Alice Santi also had one block each. McKenzie Matteson had five aces. Suzy Fritts led in digs with 11.

"Seniors McKenzie Matteson and Kately Shoemaker took charge in the front row," said Cumberland Coach Caroline Kirchmer. :Both had a strong night for us."

At Salem

Teutopolis moved its varsity record to 3-0 on the season with a victory over Salem Thursday.

But the Wooden Shoes lost the first set, 25-21 then came back with a 25-21 victory. The final set went 30-28 before the Shoes pulled out the win.

"We came out hot, but frittered away the first set with unforced errors," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "The great thing about these athletes though is that they don't give up. They understood we pooched things. The third set we got a big lead and then they scored four straight and we started playing nervous. That gave them match point. We stopped it, then stopped it three more times before finally winning.

"The great thing was that really after halfway through the first set, the girls and our fans really started getting into it, getting competitive. It's one of the great things about high school athletics, the support you get from fans."

Claresa Ruholl led the Shoes in digs with 19 while Sara Niemerg led in kills wit nine and digs with five. Emma Deters had six blocks. Danielle Probst led in assists with 21.

The junior vasrity also claimed a victory, 25-20, 25-19 to improve to 2-1. Megan Brummer had four blocks and four kills while Olivia Cates led in digs with 15. Kaley Jordan had five assists and Clara Mette three aces.

At Salem

Sullivan was a winner in two sets, 25-10, 25-20. Haylee Campbell led in aces with two, kills with five and blocks with three. Allison Sampson had nine digs. Natalie O'Dell and Audrey Kepp had four assists each.

Altamont played host to Carlyle and fell in Thursday action.

Carlyle was a winner, 25-12, 25-16.

Leading Altamont were Peyton Osteen and Della Berg with one ace each, Riley Rippetoe with five kills, Libby Reardon with seven digs, P. Osteen had eight assists and one blocked shot. Grace Lemke and Kylie Osteen had one blocked shot each.
