EHS, T-town Win, SEB Falls In Volleyball Action

SALEM -- Effingham High School successfully opened its volleyball season with a victory over host Salem Monday evening.

The Hearts won the opener 25-18 before Salem came back to take the second set 25-23. EHS then claimed the match, 25-19.

Bella Austin led the Hearts in kills with 15, digs with 14 and aces with two. Sidney Donaldson and Berkley Pullen also had two aces. Donaldson led in blocks with two. Hannah Thompson had 17 assists.

"We played a nice match," said EHS Coach Laurie Bohnhoff. "Defensively we played hard and worked pretty well together for the first match of the year. Salem blocked really well early and we adjusted towards the end of the game. We will sometimes struggle blocking because of our size, however tonight I thought we did a good job."

The Hearts fell in the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-12. Averie Wolfe and Alyssa Martin had nine digs each. Layni Frey had four kills and two aces, Pullen also had two aces and led in assists with eight. Reaghan Delong led in blocks with two.

In a freshman/sophomore contest, the Hearts won 21-12, 20-21, 15-12.

Effingham will travel to Newton Thursday.

At Casey

Teutopolis handed Casey-Westfield a loss in two sets, 25-18, 25-21.

"It's been a long time since I've been someplace that hot as tonight," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "Wow. I think we showed a ton of mental toughness dealing with opening night nerves and then the heat index, especially since the varsity had to wait for the JV contest. I liked the resiliency. In terms of the volleyball, our passing was money tonight from the get-go. If we can keep that up, it'll help our offense a ton."

The Wooden Shoes were led by Claresa Ruholl with nine digs, Danielle Probst with 13 assists and one ace, Paige Swingler with one ace, Emma Deters with six kills, Sara Zumbahlen with three blocks.

In junior varsity action, the Shoes were a winner, 25-13, 25-17.Madison Miller and Paige Swingler had six kills each, Kaley Jordan had 11 assists. Olivia Cates led in digs with nine. Katie Horn had two blocks.

At Casey

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown fell to Okaw Valley in two sets Monday.

Okaw Valley nabbed the match 25-19, 25-13.

Jayna Ireland led the homestanders with seven kills while Peyton Garrard had eight digs. Addie Sasse and Macie Gammon had one ace each. Sasse led in assists with five.

Coach Jeni Haslett's crew is back in action tonight playing host to Martinsville.
