Class 8-2A State Tournament

Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Auburn High School Saturday.

Stew-Stras fell in the opening match to Springfield Christ the King. Stew-Stras won the opening set, 25-22 but Springfield came back with 25-19, 25-19 sets for the match.

Stew-Stras was led by Kendra Hayes with six aces, 12 digs, 6 assists and eight kills. Claire VonBehrens had six assists. Brooke Schumacher had one block.

"We came out fighting strong in both the first and second sets," said Coach Courtney Wittenberg. "We played great defense, but our offense at times was a little timid. I pride these girls into being a hard serving team, and the serves just weren't there for us Friday night. Even so, we kept bouncing back, had some of the best serve receive we've had all year, and played with a lot of heart.

"I kept telling them we can't play afraid to make a mistake, but play with a purpose. Want every ball and when a mistake is made, want it again. As a coach there is no better feeling than to see things you say or work on come to light in a game like this. They had an end goal in mind: regionals, then sectionals, and lastly state.

"Last year we won regionals but lost in sectionals. Several of these girls played on the softball team that made a state appearance this year as well, so they had a taste of what could happen when they put their minds to it. I am very proud of this group, their determination and mental toughness."

The Comets ended their season with a record of 18-4. This is only the fourth time in school history that both a seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball team have made Elite Eight state appearances in the same year, the last being 2002.
