Stewardson Trinity Wins Regional, Advances To State; Three Area Teams At State Today

Stewardson Trinity regional champions.

ALTAMONT -- Stewardson Trinity Lutheran claimed the championship of the SIJHSAA Class S Regional at Altamont Lutheran Thursday evening.

Trinity won over Iuka, 25-16, 25-7 for the title and improved to a perfect 29-0.

Kalia Friese led Trinity in assists with 14, Colby McCormick had 11 kills while Mya Friese had 10. Kenzie Thompson and Zaida Wascher led in aces with four each. Wascher had 10 points. M. Friese led in digs with six.

"The girls continued to play well as a team," said Coach Tammy Manhart. "We struggled with serving a little tonight. Had more serving errors than I would like to see but we will get in the gym next week and fine tune some things. The girls are excited to be heading back to State and hope to fulfull our season goal of back-to-back state champs."

The squad will compete in the SIJHSAA Class S State Tournament Saturday, March 25. The State Tournament will be held at Herrin High School. Trinity Lutheran will face the winner of Region 3 at 11 a.m.

"Sixteen teams remain," said Coach Manhart. "We will have to win four matches to be state champions. All matches are played on the same day."

Area Teams At State

Three area teams will be competing in state tournaments today.

Sigel St. Michael will be taking part in the Class 8-1A State Tournament at Kankakee Bishop McNamara.

The Sharpsshooters enter the tourney with a 24-2 record and will take on Grant Park (18-8) at 5:45 p.m. The winner will advance to an 11 a.m. match Saturday.

Stewardson-Strasburg will be competing at the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Auburn High School.

Stew-Stras has an 18-3 record and will meet Springfield Christ the King (23-2) at 7 p.m. today. The winner advances to a match at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals.

Teutopolis will take part in the Class 8-3A State Tournament at Pana High School.

The Wooden Shoes sport a 19-7 record and will meet Morris Saratoga (22-3) at 8:15 p.m. today.

The winner advances to a 12:15 p.m. contest Saturday.
