Effingham St. Anthony handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City two losses in junior high volleyball competition Thursday.

The Bullpups won the seventh-grade match, 25-10, 25-12.

St. Anthony also claimed the eighth-grade contest. No scores were reported.

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis and Newton St. Thomas split victories Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade contest with an opening 25-17 score. St. Thomas came back with a 25-22 tally before T-town won the match, 25-19 to finish the regular season at 12-6.

"We did a nice job tonight of passing and attacking the ball," said T-town Coach Anthony Munoz. "We got more than 40 swings on the night and played well most of the match. It was a good way to go into regionals Saturday."

The Shoes were led by Cecilia Donsbach with 11 assists, Alicen Niemerg with one block, six kills and seven aces and Ella Willenborg with 19 digs

In the eighth-grade match, St. Thomas wa a winner 25-13, 25-21 to improve to 15-7.

Marie Zumbahlen led the Shoes in digs with 28. Brittany Swingler had two aces and six assists while Abbie Lee also had two aces. Gabby Tegeler led in kills with five. Genevieve Mette had one block.

"While it would be nice to win, I thoguht it was more important to make sure we got playing time in some form for everyone," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "It's really a blessing this year to coach these girls. They work hard every day, work together, encourage one another. It's challenging to have a large roster, but I love seeing kids explore their interests and their growth in confidence and ability."

At Newton

Jasper County fell in seventh-grade play but won the eighth-grade match over Robinson Thursday.

Robinson opened the seventh-grade match with a win, 25-15 but Jasper County came back taking the second set, 25-18. Robinson then won the match, 25-18.

Jasper County was led by Reich with one kill, one assist and one block. Dhom led in aces with five. Tate had five digs. Jones also had one block. Jasper County dropped to 9-9.

In eighth-grade play, Jasper County was a winner. Robinson took the opening set, 25-15 but Jasper County came back strong with 25-18, 25-22 sets for the match.

Ochs led in kills with six and aces with five. Shull had 10 assists. Probst led in digs with six as the squad improved to 13-4.

At Newton

At Clay City

The WEAA Tournament was held at Clay City.

In quarterfinal round play, West Salem defeated Clay City, 25-18, 25-15; Jasper/Geff won over St. Mary/Allendale, 25-7, 25-4 and Grayville downed New Hope, 25-10, 25-12.

In semifinal round play, Cisne downed Jasper/Geff, 25-23, 25-18 and West Salem won over Grayville, 25-23, 17-25, 15-6.

The championship went to West Salem over Cisne, 25-18, 25-12.
