St. A Sixth At M-S VB Tourney, WSS, Altamont Have Busy Weekends

MAHOMET -- Effingham St. Anthony High School finished sixth out of 16 teams at the Mahomet-Seymour Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

"Despite having four regular starters miss one or more matches each, we finished in sixth place at the 16-team Mahomet-Seymour Tournament," said St. Anthony Coach Cathy Wenthe. "I was really happy with the way the girls responded to everything that was going on."

The Bulldogs won over Prairie Central, 25-18, 25-15, fell to Washington, 25-18, 22-25, 15-4 before downing Peotone, 25-21, 25-20. St. Anthony then beat Manteno, 25-23, 14-25, 15-10 before falling to Morris, 25-16, 23-25, 15-8.

Middle hitter Lucy Fearday was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 27-8 record. They enter the post season as the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A Webber Township (Bluford) Subsectional B.

At Champaign Central

In Friday play, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg dropped a match to Champaign Central, 25-11, 25-19.

WSS was led by Halle Moomaw with nine kills and Ella Kinkelaar with 13 assists and 12 digs.

Champaign Central also claimed the junior varsity match, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9 and now sports a 15-6 record.

In freshman/sophomore action, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-22, 23-25, 15-12 to improve to 13-7-5.

In Saturday play, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Shelbyville/Mount Zion Triangular.

The Hatchets defeated Shelbyville, 25-17, 25-20.

Kinley Quast led in aces with three and digs with six, Kinkelaar had 17 assists along with one solo block and two block assists, Moomaw had nine kills and Kaylynn Carey had three block assists.

Mount Zion then downed the Hatchets, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22.

Kinkelaar and Moomaw had 11 kills each. Moomaw had three solo blocks and two block assists, Kinkelaar led in aces with three and assists with 17 and had 14 digs and Quast had 14 digs. 

"We played the last week of the season without two starters but we are looking more confident today in our new roles," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We have one more practice to fine tune some things before we start regionals Tuesday. We've had some great competition this week to finish our regular season play."

Windsor/Stew-Stras is 25-9 on the season.

Altamont competed in the Pawnee Tournament over the weekend finishing with a victory and four losses.

The Indians fell to Meridian by 25-18, 25-19 counts. Peyton Osteen had four kills, six assists and nine digs.

In the match against Taylorville, the Tornadoes were winners, 25-12, 25-13.

Altamont was led by Lanie Tedrick and Alyvia Wills with four kills each, P. Osteen with nine assists and Makaylee Splechter with 11 digs.

The Indians then fell to Edinburg by 26-24, 25-18 scores.

Leading Altamont were Wills and Briana Hassebrock with six kills each. P. Osteen with 10 assists and two aces. Maddie Splechter and Grace Lemke, also with two aces. Hassebrock with two blocks and Brianna Grunloh with eight digs.

Nokomis downed Altamont in two sets, 27-25, 25-14.

Leading the Indians were Della Berg with four kills, P. Osteen with seven assists and two aces, Hassebrock with four blocks and Grunloh with six digs.

Altamont handed Pawnee a loss in two, 25-13, 25-12.

Tedrick led in kills with eight, P. Osteen had 13 assists and two aces, Hassebrock had one block and Wills, Grunloh and Libby Reardon had six digs each.
