Bulldogs, Hatchets, Eagles, Wolves Nab Volleyball Victories

VANDALIA -- Effingham St. Anthony pushed its record to 19-5 on the season with a victory over Vandalia in volleyball action Monday.

The Bulldogs won in two sets, 25-15, 25-19. Andrea Rudolphi led the way in kills with nine while Addie Wernsing, Abbi Hatton, Lucy Fearday and Anna Niemeyer had one ace each. Fearday led in blocks with three. Wernsing led in assists with 10. Maddie Kibler had 15 digs.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony was a winner, 25-19, 24-26, 15-9 and also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 21-5, 21-6.

At Shelbyville

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg racked up another victim, this time Shelbyville in Monday action.

The Hatchets won 25-17, 25-23 and improved to 18-6 on the season.

"I felt our defense was on fire tonight," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "That helps everything else run smoothly. The girls also played the net aggressively. Shelbyville always brings a good game and they make us work for it."

Ainslie Eident led the Hatchets in aces with three. Gabby Vonderheide had eight kills. Ella Kinkelaar led in assists with 24. Kinley Quast had 17 digs. Kaylynn Carey had one solo block and two block assists.

In junior varsity action, Shelbyville was a winner. WSS took the opening set 28-26 but the Rams came back with 25-13, 25-18 scores for the match. Shelbyville also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 23-25, 25-16, 14-12.

At Newton

Newton and Teutopolis meet with the Eagles coming out the winner in two sets, 25-19, 25-23.

The Eagles were led by Schafer with 19 assists, Zumbahlen with four digs, Rauch with two aces, Smithenry with six kills and Shull with one block.

The Eagles improved to 20-7 on the season.

The Wooden Shoes were led by TaNeal Einhorn with four kills, Emily Konkel with four blocks, Sara Niemerg with 11 digs, Sara Zumbahlen with five assists and Sara Swingler with two aces.

"Newton was able to field five hitters with more kills than errors, providing steady pressure against us," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "We were able to have the lead late in the second set but a couple of wild plays went the other way and 23-23 became a 25-23 loss.

"We're working on consistency. We were able to block and pass well tonight, but our hitting was off but we're seeing more and more consistency across the primary skills. TaNeal Einhorn had a good ngiht and I loved Emma Deters' aggressiveness at the end. We just couldn't quite pull it out."

The Wooden Shoes fell to 10-16 on the season.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity match, 27-25, 25-13. The two teams split in freshman/sophomore play. T-town won 25-14 and Newton won 25-18.

Clay City scored a victory over Sandoval Monday. The Wolves won, 25-12, 25-8.

Taylor Pittman led Clay City with six blocks while Sammie Craig had six kills and five aces. Keidra Kuenstler had seven digs.
