WSS won the opener 25-11 but the Wooden Shoes fought back with a 25-22 count. WSS then went out at 25-20 to improve to 6-4 on the season.
"Win or lose, I think both teams can take a lot from this game," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We got pretty comfortable with the first set, but T-town really got us rattled from then on. Both sides had to fight hard. It was a really good game. We had a hard time letting go of each mistake and that is something we need to work on."
The Hatchets were led by Halle Moomaw and Ainslie Eident with five aces each. Moomaw had 10 kills. Ella Kinkelaar led in assists with 20. Gabby Vonderheide had 23 digs. Kaylynn Carey had one solo block and Moomaw had three assists.
"The first 15 minutes was rough tonight," said T-town Coach Jim Dietz. "Once we settled in, that became the best match in the area for the night, like watching Ali and Frazier go at it. Coach Schlechte has a great team, great passing and that was key for winning. I also thought we had a great student section tonight and a huge crowd from both teams, great environment to play in."
The Wooden Shoes were led by Sara Niemerg and Molly Pals with seven kills each, TaNeal Einhorn with four blocks, Emma Deters with four aces and Sarah Zumbahlen with 15 assists.
"Key moments were Halle Moomaw from Stew-Stras dominated the first set and the last half of the deciding set," said Dietz. "In between we were able to win the second set behind the hitting of Molly Pals and the blocking of TaNeal Einhorn and Taylor Bueker."
In junior varsity play, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-19, 25-25 to improve to 4-1 while T-town fell to 7-10. WSS also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 16-25, 25-21, 18-8 to improve to 4-2-2.
