NEWTON -- Effingham High School handed Newton losses in volleyball action Thursday.

The Hearts won 25-23, 25-23. Raegan Boone led in kills with four while Ali Davis had nine assists. Hannah Thompson led the Hearts in digs with 10.

Newton was led by Shull with five kills, two aces and two blocks while Utley had two aces and Smithenry five kills. Schafer led in assists with 11. Schafer had two blocks. Bennett led in digs with six.

Newton claimed the junior varsty contest, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12.

EHS is back in action Tuesday with the Pink Out game against Effingham St. Anthony.

At Farina

Effingham St. Anthony fell in the opening set but came back to win the match against South Central Thursday.

The Cougars were a 25-20 winner in the opener. The Bulldogs came back with 25-13, 25-19 counts for the win.

Leading the Bulldogs were Abbi Hatton with 13 kills, Addie Wernsing and Nora Gannaway with two aces each, Lucy Fearday with two blocks and Wernsing and Andrea Rudolphi with nine points each.

Leading South Central were Sierra Arnold with 15 digs; Olivia Brauer with 12 assists and four blocks; Brooklyn Garrett and Brooke Cowger with five kills each. Cowger led in aces with 20.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-17 and claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-20, 25-9.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown played host to Vandalia and sent the Vandals home with a loss Thursday.

SEB won the opener 25-22 but Vandalia rallied for a 25-18 second set. SEB then won the match 25-18.

The winners were led by Morgan Hall with six kills. Laney Baldrige and Peyton Garrard with three aces each, Shelby Sasse with nine digs, Jayna Ireland with two blocked shots and Lydia Smith with seven points.

At St. Elmo

Carlyle hosted Altamont and claimed a victory in two sets, 25-22, 25-17.

Altamont was led by Lanie Tedrick with five attacks and one ace, Peyton Osteen with 13 assists and one ace; Maddie Schlecte with one ace and Alyvia Wills and Osteen with six digs each.

At Teutopolis

Teuotpolis handed Salem a loss in varsity action but fell in freshman/sophomore and junior varsity play Thursday.

In the varsity contest, the Wooden Shoes won 25-21, 26-24 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Leading the Shoes were Niemerg with seven kills, Einhorn with two blocks, Zumbahlen with eight digs and 14 assists and A. Ruholl with five aces.

"We had some positives tonight," said Coach Jim Dietz. "Ruholl's serving was a biggie but the big one that doesn't appear on the stat sheet is Emma Deters' passing. They kept serving at her and she kept dropping dimes on the setter's head. A lot of people don't realize the challenge of sitting out three rotations, coming in and boom, having the other team come right at you. Emma handled that perfectly this evneing.

"Now we have to gear up for the Fairfield Tourney Saturday. It's a tough field and if we have runs of errors, the teams down there will take advantage of that."

In the junior varsity contest, Salem was a winner, 25-9, 25-21. The Wildcats also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-15, 26-28, 20-5.

Teutopolis will be back in action Saturday at the Fairfield Mule Tournament.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg tallied a victory over Moweaqua Central A&M. The Hatchets won, 25-17, 25-8 Thursday.

"The girls started off the season with a bang," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "It was nice to see all their hard work from summer paying off. I'm really happy to see the season bar set so high on the first night. Everything just clicked so well."

Ainslie Eident led the team in aces with four. Halle Moomaw led in kills with nine. Ella Kinkelaar had 22 assists. Kinley Quast led in digs with six. Kaylynn Carey had two solo blocks.

In junior varsity play, WSS won the opener 25-23 before Central A&M took the second set 25-21. WSS came back to win the match 25-15.

The two teams split in the freshman/sophomore match. WSS won the opener 25-17 before CAM claimed the second set 25-16.

At Moweaqua

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City handed Dieterich a varsity loss in Thursday action.

The Bobcats won 25-23, 25-16. Marissa Summers led the winners in kills with four and assists with five. Gracie Heckert had six aces and six digs, Kyleigh Wallace with three blocks and Kaycie Stefanski had six digs.

In the junior varsity  match, Dieterich was a winner, 25-20, 25-21. CHBC won the freshman/sophomore match, 25-16, 15-11.

North Clay defeated Webber Township (Bluford) in three Thursday.

The Cardinals fell in the opener 25-14 but came back strong with 25-19, 25-17 scores for the win.

Webber Township won the junior varsity match, 25-23, 25-13. North Clay was a winner in freshman/sophomore play, 25-12, 25-5.

Clay City handed Flora a loss. Clay City was a winner 25-15, 25-13.

Leading the winners were Sammie Craig with six hits and six kills, Taylor PIttman with seven blocks and Keidra Kuenstler with five aces and five digs.
