RIVERTON -- Teutopolis Junior High School advanced in the Class 7-3A State Volleyball Tournament Friday.

The Wooden Shoes won their opener over Morris Saratoga. T-town took the opening set 25-21 before Morris Saratoga nabbed the second set 25-15. T-town then won the match, 28-26.

In other opening round matches, Kankakee Bishop McNamara defeated Staunton, 25-15, 25-18; Athens won over Mossville, 25-6, 25-17 and Eureka downed Warrensburg-Latham, 25-16, 25-9.

The second round and finals were supposed to take place Saturday but were postponed until Tuesday because of the death of high school teacher Dave Dressel at Riverton High School where the tourney was being held. The popular science teacher was found unresponsive by a school official. Dressel, who taught chemistry and physics, was there to supervise Saturday school.

T-town advanced with a 16-4 record and will face Kankakee Bishop McNamara (15-1) at 4:30 p.m. followed by Athens (22-4) taking on Eureka (23-1) at 5:45 p.m. The third place contest is set for 7 p.m. with the championship at 8:15 p.m.

Teutopolis -- Madison Probst, 1 ace, 2 assists; Marie Zumbahlen, 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 block; Gabby Tegeler, 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 dig; Brittany Swingler, 2 assists, 1 kill; Clara Mette, 5 aces; Elise Pals, 3 aces, 3 kills, 4 blocks; Kera Hartke,1  dig; Adrienne Koester, 1 kill

 

Class 7-1 A State Tournament

Sigel St. Michael competed in the Class 7-1A State Tournament at Clinton Junior High School Friday.

The Sharpshooters fell to Augusta Southeastern, 25-18, 25-13. St. Michael ended the season with a 21-1 record.

In other first round matches, Ottawa Marquette defeated Philo St. Thomas, 25-19, 25-15; Pontiac St. Mary's downed Hartsburg-Emden, 26-24, 25-22 and Kewanee Visitation beat Decatur Lutheran, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15.

In the semifinals Saturday, Augusta Southeastern downed Ottawa Marquette, 25-8, 25-7 while Pontaic St. Mary's won over Kewanee Visitation, 25-14, 22-25, 25-10.

Augusta Southeastern won the championship with 25-16, 25-16 scores over Pontiac St. Mary's. Augusta Southeastern finished with a 17-1 record.

In the third place match, Kewanee Visitation defeated Ottawa Marquette, 25-12, 25-14.
