Trinity Lutheran Places Fifth At Lutheran State Tourney

The Trinity Lutheran volleyball team went to Springfield this weekend to play in the Lutheran JH State Tournament.

"We competed in pool play on Friday and Saturday morning defeating Trinity Springfield, 25-5, 25-11; Yorkville, 27-25, 25-12 and Crystal Lake, 25-20, 25-16, taking first in our pool," said Coach Tammy Manhart. "The top eight teams then competed in bracket play, the bottom eight teams unfortunately were done competing.

"We faced Bloomington Trinity in our first bracket match.  We struggled to get on track this whole match and lost in two sets, 25-23, 25-17. This put us on the losing side of the bracket so the best we could place was fifth. That is exactly what we did. We won our next two matches defeating Rockford, 25-22, 25-21 and Mt. Prospect, 25-18, 25-17.

"It was a great weekend. The girls did a great job finishing 5-1 for the weekend.  I wasn't sure what to expect out of this team this year because they are young and didn't get to compete last year since the season was cancelled because of Covid.  This was the first time that any of these girls got to compete in the Lutheran State Tourney.

"Two years ago I had a big group of eighth-graders and two seventh-graders that won the championship but none of my current players played for that team. This team has grown so much in just the few games that we have played this fall.  I am excited to see where they go from here. They have so much potential.
