South Central, Cumberland, WSS Claim Regional Crowns

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed the championship of the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Regional.

South Central, Cumberland and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed regional volleyball championships Thursday evening and will move on to sectional play Monday.

 

Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed the championship of the Moweaqua Central A&M Regional Thursday.

The Hatchets won over Macon Meridian, 25-14, 25-11 and advances to the Tuscola Sectional Monday to face Farmer City Blue Ridge at 5:30 p.m. Farmer City Blue Ridge downed Champaign Judah Christian, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22 to win its own regional.

Leading Windsor/Stew-Stras were Kinley Quast with four aces and 11 digs, Gabby Vonderheide with eight kills, Ella Kinkelaar with 16 assists, Halle Moomaw with two solo blocked shots and Brianna Hewing and Kaylynn Carey with four block assists each.

"I really want to thank our fans tonight for being so loud," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "They carried the girls tonight. It was awesome."

In the second match Monday, Champaign St. Thomas More will take on Broadlands Heritage at 6:30 p.m.

Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg -- Kinkelaar, 2 aces, 6 kills, 16 assists, 7 digs; Vonderheide, 8 kills, 7 digs; Hayes, 4 kills, 8 digs; Moomaw, 2 kills, 2 solo blocks; Hewing, 4 kills, 2 assists, 3 digs, 4 block assists; Quast, 4 aces, 6 assists, 11 digs; Carey, 4 block assists

 

Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Regional

South Central captured the championship of this regional by handing National Trail Conference opponent Altamont a loss in three sets.

The Cougars won the opener 25-16 but Altamont came back strong to take the second set 25-21. South Central then won the match, 25-22.

Halle Smith led the winners in kills with 12 while Olivia Brauer had 16 assists. Sierra Arnold led in digs with 14. Brooke Cowger had one block. The Cougars had a team total of 31 kills.

Altamont was led by Ella Ruffner with 29 digs while Ellie McManaway had 22. Ada Tappendorf led in aces with two. Peyton Osteen had 15 assitss. Ruffner led in kills with 11. Ruffner, Osteen, Briana Hassebrock and Grace Lemke had one block each.

South Central improved to 28-6 on the season and heads to the Wayne City Sectional Monday and will face Norris City-Omaha-Enfield at 5:30 p.m. NCOE won the Junction Gallatin County Regional by downing Carrier Mills, 25-20, 25-13.

St. Anthony Regional

South Central -- Smith, 12 kills, 11 digs; Reynolds, 2 kills, 13 assists, 5 digs; Brauer, 16 assists, 6 digs; Arnold, 10 kills, 14 digs; Garrett, 3 kills, 1 ace, 10 digs; Cowger, 4 kills,,1 block, 3 digs; Runge, 5 digs

Altamont -- McManaway, 22 digs, 1 ace, 7 assists, 9 kills; Tappendorf, 5 digs, 2 aces, 3 kills; Ruffner, 29 digs, 1 ace, 1 block, 11 kills; Walker, 14 digs; Splechter, 18 digs; Osteen, 8 digs, 1 block, 15 assists, 1 kill; Hassebrock, 2 digs, 1 block; Wills, 5 digs; Lemke, 5 digs, 1 block

 

Class 1A Clay City Regional

Cumberland came out the champion in this regional by downing host Clay City Thursday.

The Pirates tallied 25-16, 25-20 wins.

Clay City ended the season with a 22-7 record. Leading the Wolves were Sammie Craig with six kills, Taylor PIttman with 11 blocks, Elaina Kessler with one ace and Keidra  Kuenstler with 14 digs.

Cumberland advances to the Wayne City Sectional and will face Woodlawn at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Woodlawn downed Grayville to win the Edwards County (Albion) Regional. Grayville won the opener 25-23 but Woodlawn came back with 25-23, 25-16 scores for the victory.

Class 1A Clay City Regional

Clay City -- Miller, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 4 digs; Kessler, 1 ace, 3 digs; Pittman, 5 kills, 11 blocks, 1 dig; Hance, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 1 dig; Beck, 2 kills, 2 digs; Craig, 6 kills, 3 blocks, 5 digs; Kuenstler, 14 digs

  

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton saw its season come to a close with a loss in the championship match of its own regional Thursday.

The Eagles fell to No. 2 Breese Central, 25-21, 25-18 and ends the season with a 30-7 record.

Leading Newton were Ochs with nine kills and one block, Schafer with 16 assists and Bennett with nine digs.

Breese Central advances to the Vandalia Sectional to face the winner of the Roxana Regional, either Staunton or Roxana at 6:30 p.m. The opener will have Breese Mater Dei against Pana at 5:30.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton -- Ochs, 9 kills, 1 block, 1 dig; Kessler, 3 kills, 1 dig; Rauch, 2 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs; Johnson, 2 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs; Smithenry, 2 kills, 1 dig; Schafer, 2 kills, 16 assists, 3 digs; Bennett, 9 digs; Russell, 7 digs; Hemrich, 3 digs; Mulvey, 1 dig

 

Class 3A Effingham Regional

Mattoon came out the champion of the Effingham Regional Thursday evening.

The Green Wave downed Marion. Mattoon won the opener 25-15 but Marion came back with a 25-23 count in the second set. Mattoon then won the match, 25-16.

Mattoon advances to face Waterloo at the Bethalto Civic Memorial Sectional Monday at 5:30 p.m. In the second match, another Apollo Conference team, Taylorville, will be facing Centralia at 6:30 p.m. Taylorville won the Mascoutah Regional over Mascoutah, 25-11, 25-14.
