SEB Claims Two Wins at EIC Tourney, Area Volleyball Roundup

ST. ELMO -- St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up two high school volleyball victories in the opening round of the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament Monday evening.

SEB won the opener over Ramsey, 25-13, 25-11. Morgan Hall led in aces with nine, digs with nine and points with 14 for the winners. Laney Baldrige led in kills with six. 

Ramsey then defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the second contest. CHBC won the opener 25-14 but Ramsey came back to take the second set, 25-23 then won the match, 25-23.

CHBC was led by Tatyana Duckwitz with eight kills, seven aces, one block and 11 digs. Raechelle Kelly with 12 assists. Kyleigh Wallace had one block.

St. Elmo/Brownstown then captured its second win by beating CHBC, 25-22, 25-20. 

SEB was led by Hall with two aces, nine digs and one blocked shot, Baldrige with five kills, six points and one block and Lillian Nolen with one block.

CHBC was led by Duckwitz with seven kills, two aces, one block and 13 points, Kelly with six assists and Gracie Heckert with one blocked shot.

The tournament continues tonight as Patoka meets Martinsville at 6 p.m. followed by Martinsville against Mulberry Grove at 7 and Patoka facing Mulberry Grove at 8.

The tournament comes to a close Thursday.

At Strasburg

Two powerhouse volleyball teams squared off Monday evening and Newton came out the winner over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

The Eagles won in two, 25-15, 25-20 and improve to 28-6 on the season.

Newton was led by Johnson with seven kills and 11 digs, Schafer with 14 assists and five aces and Ochs with two blocks.

"We really struggled to find the floor tonight," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We didn't pass well which led to a breakdown of our offense. Newton came to play. They had a very strong game and they caught us on a bad night.

"We did celebrate our seniors, Brianna Hewing, Natalie Hayes and Bella Braden."

The Hatchets were led by Ella Kinkelaar with one ace and 18 assists, Halle Moomaw with six kills and three block assists and Kinley Quast with one ace. WSS dropped to 24-5 on the season.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-17 and the freshman/sophomore contest, 27-25, 22-25, 15-5.

At Toledo

Cumberland tallied two victories over Teutopolis in volleyball action Monday evening.

The Pirates won the varsity match, 25-11, 25-13 and claimed the junior varsity contest, 25-18, 25-20.

In the varsity match, T-town was led by Macy Swingler with seven digs, Tia Probst with three kills and five assists and Emily Konkel and Summer Wall with an ace each.

The Wooden Shoes claimed the freshman match, 29-27.
