WSS Takes Second, EHS Consy Champs at Pana/Shelbyville Volleyball Invite

The Hatchets finished second in the meet while EHS won the consolation championship.
WSS defeated Effingham 25-18, 25-20, had a tough battle over Pana, 26-24, 26-24, downed Neoga, 25-7, 25-20 and beat Newton, 25-21, 25-17. That put the Hatchets into the championship match against Champaign St. Thomas More and the they fell 25-20, 25-12.
"Overall, we played well today," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We had times where we let down but we pulled out to get second place. We really struggled against St. Thomas More. We just couldn't find the hole on the floor. They are such a strong team. It's nice to see that competition every once in a while."
The Hatchets are now 19-4 on the season.
Effingham lost to WSS in pool play, 25-18, 25-20 then beat Neoga, 25-13, 23-25, 15-5. The Hearts fell to Pana, 25-0, 25-19 and then won over Pana JV, 25-18, 25-13. In the consolation championship, the Hearts beat Shelbyville, 25-14, 25-17.
Newton defeated Shelbyville, 25-13, 25-20 and won over Pana JV, 25-13, 25-16. The Eagles then fell to St. Thomas More, 25-11, 25-17 and lost to Windsor/Stew-Stras 25-21, 25-17. The Eagles fell in the final contest to Pana, 25-18, 25-13.
Newton is now 20-6 on the season.

At Louisville
Clay City handed North Clay (Louisville) losses in varsity and junior varsity play Friday.
The Wolves went three sets in varsity action, 25-11, 22-25, 26-24. Taylor PIttman and Sammie Craig led the winners in kills with 10 each. Pittman had 10 blocks. Hailey Miller led in aces with four and digs with eight. Keidra Kuenstler also had eight digs.
In the junior varsity match, Clay City won 25-19, 25-23.
