Altamont, WSS To Meet For Sectional Title

WSS handed Cumberland a loss in the first match, 25-13, 25-20. In the opening set, the Hatchets moved ahead 17-6 and never looked back. Serving was a key as Brianna Hewing went behind the line and picked up four points and Adi McCray tallied four more and the Hatchets never looked back.
In the second set, Cumberland tied the score and moved ahead by five. But WSS came back when Hannah Hayes went to the serving line, getting three straight points.
The Pirates held a 20-17 lead but WSS took the serve and Hewing had an ace and served up seven straight points and the Hatchets took the match.
Cumberland finished the season with an 18-15 record.
"Very happy with our play tonight considering we had three starters off the court," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We were strong at the net but also had a good night on defense. Set two was a little bumpy and we started to hesitate but was able to finish on top."
Windsor/Stew-Stras has won five straight matches and heads into the championship match with a 25-14 mark.
In the second match, Tri-County had Altamont on the ropes but the Indians battled back for the victory.
Tri-County claimed the opener 25-22 before Altamont came back to take the second set 25-23. Then it looked like Tri-County was online to advance to the title match.
Tri-County served up six points right out of the gate to take a 6-1 lead. Altamont tied the match at 9-9 but Tri-County moved ahead by one. Altamont had enough trailing, so tied the score and moved ahead on an ace by Ada Tappendorf and that was the match.
Tri-County ended the season at 22-9 while Altamont moved into the title match with a 30-7-1 record.
Altamont and Windsor/Stew-Stras have met twice during the season in the National Trail Conference. The Indians won both those matches taking the regular season contest, 25-22, 25-21 then downing the Hatchets 25-11, 25-14 to win the National Trail Conference Tournament. The pair square off for the title Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The winner of this sectional will face either Woodlawn or Norris City-Omaha-Enfield at the Red Hill (Bridgeport) Super-Sectional Friday evening. Woodlawn defeated Goreville, 25-11, 25-10 while NCOE downed Grayville 25-11, 21-25, 25-22 to advance to the title match of the Marion Crab Orchard Sectional.

Class 2A
In the Salem Sectional, Metropolis Massac County handed Shelbyville a loss in two sets, 25-6, 25-14.
Winning the other match was Fairfield over Pana, 25-21, 25-20.
Metropolis Massac County now meets Fairfield at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional championship.
Class 3A
In the Waterloo Sectional, Charleston saw its season come to a close. The Trojans fell to Waterloo, 25-21, 25-23.
In the opening match, Centralia downed East St. Louis Senior, 25-16, 25-17.
Centralia faces Waterloo at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the sectional title.
