EHS Wins, St. A Falls, Area Volleyball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Newton and claimed an opening season volleyball win in two sets, 25-13, 25-19 Thursday.

The Hearts were led in kills by Kennedy Sowell and Sam Urch with six each while Jacy Boatman added five. Haley Dively had 14 assists and three aces. Boatman led in digs with eight. Alexis Chrappa, Sowell and Urch led in blocks with one each.

In junior varsty play, Newton claimed the victory, 25-10, 25-12. The Eagles also won a freshman match, 24-26, 25-22, 12-10.

Effingham will be back in action in the Pink Out contest at Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday.

At St. Anthony

South Central came calling and claimed the varsity match over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday.

The Cougars won in two sets, 28-26, 25-22. Sydnee Garrett led South Central in points with eight. Madyson Magnus had seven assists. Angelica Rivera led in digs with five. Halle Smith had seven kills.

The Bulldogs were led by Ada Rozene with five kills. Kyra Swearingen had 10 assists and seven points.

St. Anthony claimed the junior varsity match. South Central won the opener 25-20 but St. Anthony came back with 25-14, 15-12 scores for the win.

South Central won the freshman contest, 25-14, 25-22.

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened the season with a bang Thursday.

The Hatchets went 27-25 in the opening set. Central A&M then came back with a 25-17 win in the second set. WSS then pulled out the victory, 25-22.

"Wow, what a way to start a season," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We obviously still have some kinks to iron out but we had a lot of really nice play. We had to fight for every point so it was an intense night. This team has a lot of potential and I can't wait to see how they progress."

Lexi Domzalski led the team in assists with 25. Anna Schlechte led in aces with two and digs with 25. Mackinzee Reynolds and Karlie Bean had 10 kills each. Reynolds and Brianna Hewing had two assists each.

WSS also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-20.

Vandalia claimed a victory over visiting St. Elmo/Brownstown in volleyball action Thursday.

The Vandals won the opener 25-23 and came back with a 25-13 second set. Vayda Smith, Josie Strauch and Kalea Yagow had two kills each for SEB. Natalie Oberlink led in aces with two. Katelyn Maxey had 12 digs. Oberlink, Smith and Yagow had three points each.

Dieterich captured a win in varsity action Thursday evening over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Movin' Maroons won the opener 25-18. CHBC came back with a 25-20 second set. Dieterich then claimed the victory, 25-20.

Leading Dieterich were Gabby Hardiek with 20 kills, seven assists, four aces and three digs, Allie Poe with seven digs, Kaitlin Boerngen wih eight digs, Emily Bloemer with 10 kills, 16 assists and 10 digs and Molly Niemerg with eight digs.

Leading CHBC were Lauren Wojcik with nine kills and two blocks. Kylee Bertin had two aces and 15 assists. Kirsten Schick had two blocks. Jacque Witteborg had 10 digs.

CHBC won the junior varsity match, 25-11, 28-26.

Teutopolis won both the varsity and junior varsity against Salem Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes were 25-12, 25-21 winners in varsity action. Eve Walker led the Shoes in blocks with two while Erica Michels had three digs.

T-town also won the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-22. T-town and Salem split freshman victories, 13-25, 25-18.

Altamont downed Carlyle in varsity volleyball play Thursday.

The Indians won 25-12, 25-19. Jackman led in kills with eight and had two blocks. McManaway had 19 assists and two aces. Mette led in digs with six and aces with two. Eckhardt had two aces. McManaway had two blocks.

Altamont lost the junior varsity match, 23-25, 25-18, 16-25.

Clay City fell to Flora in varsity action Thursday, 24-26, 25-14, 24-26.

Leading Clay City were Malorie Craig with 16 kills, Kaylee North with 19/4 aces and Hailey Miller with 11 kills.

Flora also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-19, 19-25, 16-14.
