WSS Captures Two Wins, Neoga One As NTC Tourney Opens

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament with two victories Thursday evening at St. Anthony's Enlow Center.

The Hatchets took a 25-4, 25-11 win over South Central. Carson Cole led the winners with five aces and 12 digs while Megan Schlechte tallied 14 kills. Mackenzi Tabbert led in assists with 20.

Neoga then claimed a victory over South Central, 25-23, 25-21.

Mary Hill had 10 kills for the Indians while Zoe Meadows finished with 13 digs. Jaclyn Atwell led in aces with three. Aly Easton had seven assists.

WIndsor/Stew-Stras then defeated Neoga, 25-16, 25-10.

Tabbert had four aces and 25 assists for the winners. M. Schlechte led in kills with 15 and digs with 11.

Neoga was led by Hill with six kills, Atwell with three blocks, Easton with four assists and O. Titus with nine digs.

"The girls played well tonight despite some injuries," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "The last few games they were a little flat but tonight it was fun to watch."

Windsor/Stew-Stras improves to 23-4 on the season.

The tournament continues tonight with Pool B at the Enlow Center. Altamont faces Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 5 followed by North Clay (Louisville) against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 6 and Altamont facing North Clay at 7.

In Pool C at Goff Gym, St. Elmo/Brownstown meets Dieterich at 5 followed by St. Anthony taking on Dieterich at 6 and the Bulldogs then facing SEB at 7.

The tourney comes to a close Saturday with Bronze, Silver and Gold flight play.

At Effingham

Effingham High School won the opening set over Mahomet-Seymour in action Thursday, 27-25. But M-S came back with 25-22, 25-20 wins for the match.

The Hearts were led by Natalie Carie in kills with eight. Carsyn Fearday had 15 assists and 13 digs. Jacy Boatman led in aces with four. Lexi Chrappa had four blocks.

The Hearts drop to 14-15 on the season.

In junior varsity action, Effingham was a winner, 25-12, 25-20 and improves to 12-5.

Effingham won the freshman/sophomore match. The Hearts lost the opener 21-16 but came back with 21-18, 15-12 wins for a 6-9-1 record.

Newton got back on the winning track with a victory over Olney Thursday.

The Eagles won 25-16, 25-16 and now sports a 19-8 record and a perfect 7-0 Little Illini Conference mark.

Bierman led in kills with 11 and blocks with two. Probst also had two blocks. Hemrich had 26 assists, Meinhart led in digs with seven.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-20. Olney captured the freshman contest, 27-25, 25-23.

Cumberland handed Villa Grove a loss, 25-20, 25-16 in action Thursday.

Tayler McMechan led the Pirates in assists with 13 while Katelyn Yaw had eight kills. Maddie Hendrix finished with five blocks and Danae Sowers had 11 digs.

Cumberland improves to 15-12 on the season.
