Altamont, EHS, Newton Compete in Volleyball Tourneys

HIGHLAND -- Altamont High School competed in the Highland Volleyball Tournament during the weekend and finished with a 2-3 record.

The Indians beat Columbia in pool play, 25-22, 25-16. They then lost to Centralia, 25-18, 25-16 and Highland, 25-11, 25-14.

They defeated Alton in the consolation semifinals, 25-14, 25-11. That put the Indians in the consolation championship where they lost to Columbia. The Indians won the opener 25-23 but Columbia came back with 25-16, 15-7 counts for the match.

Leading in kills for the tourney was Mette with 25. Grimsley led in digs with 72 and had six aces, Kuhns 35 assists and Runge, Jackman and Mayhus five blocks each.

Pana/Shelbyville Invitational

Effingham and Newton competed in the Pana/Shelbyville Invitational during the weekend.

Effingham fell to Champaign St. Thomas More, 25-13, 25-20 then lost to Shelbyville 25-20, 17-25, 15-13 before beating Neoga 25-20, 25-15 in pool play.

The Hearts lost to Newton 25-16, 16-25, 15-12 before beating Neoga 25-11, 25-12 again.

Natalie Carie led EHS in kills with 39. Carsyn Fearday had 85 assists and seven aces. Kiyah Kuhlman had seven blocks and 35 digs. Miranda Fox also had 35 digs.

Newton went 1-4. Rochester downed the Eagles, 25-18, 25-22 followed by Pana with a 25-21, 25-19 win. Newton then fell to  Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 25-22, 25-12.

The Eagles took a win over Effingham, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12 before losing to Pana, 25-17, 25-22.

Meinhart and Probst led in aces with eight each. Probst had 24 kills while Bierman chipped in with 23. Kuhl led in blocks with nine. Geltz had 62 digs. Newton is now 17-8 on the season.
