Despite suffering a tough loss in the championship match earlier in the day, the mood was decidedly upbeat in Stewardson-Strasburg High School Gym Saturday evening, as the Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchets were welcomed home in style.

The girls were intercepted by fire engines in Windsor and escorted to Stew-Stras where the reception was held.

Hatchets Coach Ronda Schlechte said she would have loved to claim the championship trophy, but said she wouldn't trade that second place trophy for anything in the world.

Schlechte praised her team and the individual members, especially her four seniors...Mikayla Haddock, Maria Gentry, Kasey Bean and Taylor Rentfro...making note of the individual and team state records set by the squad, including 29 kills for Megan Schlechte and 48 assists Mackenzi Tabbert in Friday's win as well as the team registering a record 55 kills.

Each of the four seniors spoke at the Welcome Home and some were funny, some serious and one brought to tears in the case of Taylor Rentfro, but each received warm applause.

And, even though the season just ended, there is already talk about next year. After finishing third, then second, in consecutive seasons, the future looks bright for Hatchets volleyball.
