WSS, North Clay, Newton Win Volleyball Regionals

ST. ELMO -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School captured the championship of the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Volleyball Regional Thursday.
WSS won in two sets over Effingham St. Anthony 25-14, 25-13.
"We started a little rough but found our rhythem and had another good night," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte.
Martina Gratz led the winners in aces with three while Megan Schlechte had 11 kills. Mackenzi Tabbert led in assists with 20. Mikayla Haddock had six digs. The Hatchets are now 30-6 on the season.
St. Anthony was led by Marci Mills with six kills. Abby Stock and Katie Kabbes had one ace each. Shea Kinkelaar had two block assists.
Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to its own sectional and will face Hutsonville/Palestine at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Hutsonville/Palestine won the Class 1A Martinsville Regional with a hard-fought 25-9, 22-25, 25-19 win over host Martinsville.
St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Class 1A Oblong Regional
North Clay (Louisville) captured the championship of the Oblong Regional Thursday.
The Cardinals defeated Clay City 28-26, 25-17.
North Clay now advances to face Bethany Okaw Valley at the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Sectional Monday at 5:30 p.m. Bethany Okaw Valley won its own regional by downing Broadlands Heritage, 25-22, 25-23.
Class 2A Shelbyville Regional
Teutopolis saw its season come to a close at the Shelbyville Regional in the title contest Thursday.
Pana downed the Wooden Shoes 26-24, 25-16.
"Well, our season came to an end tonight as we fell to Pana," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "It was a hard-fought match, well played by both teams. In the end, we made the most mistakes or at least failed to make the necessary plays on defense, so we lost. But both teams brought their A games. The first set was really good volleyball. Pana ran out to a quick seven point lead in set two. We whittled it down to four points but we could never get any closer as they pulled away to win the set and match.
"There is a lot to be proud of. This group finished with the best record in school history at 24-12. They played in just their second regional championship match and they beat a few teams that no other T-town team had been able to do."
Jolene Bueker led T-town in digs with 16, kills with nine and points with six. Savannah Grimes had nine assists. Julia Frye and Macy Michels had two blocks each.
Pana advances to the Robinson Sectional where it will face Newton at 5:30 p.m. Monday. In the second match, Edwards County and Kansas Co-op meet at 6:30.
Shelbyville Regional
Teutopolis -- Bueker, 16 digs, 9 kills, 1 ace, 6 points; Frye, 2 blocks, 1 dig, 1 kill, 2 points; Grimes, 13 digs, 1 ace, 2 points, 9 assists; Hoene, 1 point; Huston, 5 digs, 1 point, 5 assists; Jansen, 4 digs; C. Class 2A Kansas Regional
Altamont saw its hopes of a regional championship fade away with a loss in the title contest against Kansas Co-op Thursday.
Kansas Co-op had to go all three sets to beat the Indians. Kansas won 25-18 before Altamont roared back for a 25-17 count. Kansas then claimed the title 25-11.
Mette led Altamont in kills with seven. Grimsley had 16 digs. Hoene led in assists with 11. Jackman had three blocks.
Kansas Co-op advances to the Class 2A Robinson Sectional Monday and will meet Edwards County at 6:30 p.m.
Kansas Regional

Class 2A Fairfield Regional
Newton captured the championship of the Fairfield Regional with a victory over the host squad.
The Eagles won the opener 28-26 then claimed the second set 25-17.
Geltz led in digs with 10 and aces with two. Frohning led in kills with 16. Hemrich had 18 assists. Bierman led the Eagles in blocks with two.
Newton improves to 28-7 on the season and will now face Pana at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Robinson Sectional
Fairfield Regional

Class 3A Jacksonville Regional
Taylorville picked up a victory over Highland to win the championship of the Jacksonville Regional, 25-22, 26-24.
Taylorville advances to the Effingham Sectional against Mount Zion at 6:30 p.m. Monday. In the opening contest, Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin will meet Mattoon at 5:30 p.m.
