SEB, South Central, T-town Win Volleyball Regional Openers

ST. ELMO -- Former St. Elmo Coach Elise Asher had to be proud. Two of her former players squared off against each other Monday evening in the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Volleyball Regional as coaches.

Jenni Moore Haslet took her St. Elmo/Brownstown team to a win over Katy Heckert Noble's Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City squad. SEB won the opener 25-19 but CHBC came back to take the second set 27-25. SEB then claimed the match 25-22.

SEB was led by Madison Carson with 16 assists, Katelyn Maxey with 13 digs, Marlee Nolen with seven aces, three blocked shots and 14 points, Natalie Oberlink with three blocked shots and Dana Shelton with eight kills and 13 digs.

CHBC was led by Lauren Wojcik with six kills and three blocked shots, Jenna Wojcik and Kylee Bertin with two aces each, Taylor Oldham with 10 assists and Olivia Witteborg with 15 digs.

SEB will now face top-seeded Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 5:30 p.m. today.

Iin the second match, South Central defeated Ramsey in two sets, 25-13, 25-18.

Zoe Johnston tallied 13 points and had 10 assists for the Cougars. MacKenzie Patten had two aces and six digs. Serina Lee led in kills with seven.

South Central takes on Effingham St. Anthony at 6:30 tonight.

Class 1A Martinsville Regional

Villa Grove handed Chrisman a loss in opening round play. Villa Grove won 25-23, 25-18.

Villa Grove will now face Hutsonville/Palestine at 5:30 p.m. today followed by Neoga taking on Martinsville at 6:30.

 

Class 1A Oblong Regional

Dieterich saw its season come to a close in the Oblong Regional Monday.

Cisne handed the Movin' Maroons the loss 25-14, 25-19.

Dieterich was led by Jenny Robard and Nicole Flood with five kills each, Robard led in aces with two, Hannah Hunzinger had 11 assists and Lauren Garbe led in digs with six. The Maroons end the season at 4-24.

Oblong Regional

Class 2A Shelbyville Regional

Teutopolis advanced in the Shelbyville Regional with an opening round victory Monday.

T-town downed Sullivan in the second match of the evening, 25-10, 25-13. Jolene Bueker had seven digs for the Shoes while Courtney Hoene had five aces and 13 points. Macy Michels led in kills with eight.

"We played Sullivan earlier in the year so we knew they struggled with their serve receive," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "We served aggressively but we kept the serve in the court. We didn't miss any serves and we netted 11 aces. We also got a number of free balls off their serve receive that we converted into points.

"Courtney Hoene spent the last couple practices working on her floater and it paid off big time. She was 15 of 15 with five aces. Macy and Erica Michels combined for 13 kills and we had some big defensive plays from Grace Walker and Katelyn Jansen."

In the opening match, Moweaqua Central A&M downed Vandalia 25-20, 25-22.

Moweaqua Central A&M now faces Pana tonight at 5:30 followed by Teutopolis against Shelbyville at 6:30.

Shelbyville Regional

Class 2A Kansas Regional

Casey-Westfield ended Cumberland's season Monday evening.

The Warriors downed Cumberland 27-17 in the opening set but the Pirates came back with a 25-16 victory. Casey-Westfield then went out at 25-16.

Casey-Westfield now faces Kansas Co-op at 5:30 tonight followed by Altamont taking on Marshall at 6:30.

 

Class 2A Fairfield Regional

Robinson claimed a win over Eldorado in the only match Monday evening at Fairfield.

The Maroons won 26-24, 25-13. Robinson now faces Newton tonight at 5:30 followed by Fairfield against Flora at 6:30.

 

Class 3A Jacksonville Regional

Jacksonville knocked off Jerseyville Jersey in two sets Monday at its own regional, 25-11, 25-19.

Jacksonville will now take on Taylorville at 5:30 p.m. today followed by Effingham meeting Highland at 6:30.
