TEUTOPOLS -- Effingham High School came calling and claimed the first set with a 25-19 count. But Teutopolis came back to take the second set 28-26 then handed the Hearts a loss with a 27-25 count Monday in volleyball competition.

"It wasn't very good volleyball but it was exciting," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "Effingham won set one by a wide margin. We've been down a set before. The girls do a great job of coming together as a team when they face diversity. It worked tonight. We trailed in boths sets two and three but managed to make plays when we had to. Effingham's defense was the best we've seen all year. They did a great job of covering the floor. Our defense had a diffcult time with their offspeed attacks and tips."

Erica Michels had 20 digs for the Shoes while Macy Michels had 13 blocks and scored 10 points. Jolene Bueker led in kills with nine. Savannah Grimes had 14 assists.

Effingham was led by Jordan Christy in kills with 11. Aly Armstrong had 15 assists. Kourtney Cordes led in blocks with five. Miranda Fox had 18 digs. The Hearts drop to 3-7 on the season.

Effingham claimed the junior varsity match 27-25, 27-25 to improve to 4-4.T-town was a winner in freshman/sophomore play 25-19, 25-21.

At Farina

Altamont High School took the varsity match over South Central in two sets Monday evening.

The Indians won 25-16, 25-19. Wolff led in kills with six while Grimsley had 12 digs. Hoene and Kuhns had seven assists each. Jackson and Mette had two blocks each. Altamont improves to 2-1 in the National Trail Conference, 8-1 overall.

South Central was led by MacKenzie Potter with five points, Miranda Douthit with five kills and Baylie Maske and Zoe Johnston with five assists each. Maske had three digs. The Cougars drop to 2-2 in the NTC, 4-7 overall.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 3-0 in the NTC, 5-0 overall. South Central drops to 3-4.

Dieterich came out a winner against Mulberry Grove in two sets, 25-19, 25-23.

Lauren Garbe led the Maroons with 14 kills. Hannah Hunzinger had 18 assists and four aces. Taylor Curry had four aces while Allie Poe had four digs.

Dieterich also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20.

St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up a win over Ramsey, 25-12, 25-4 in action Monday.

SEB's Marlee Nolen had nine kills, five aces and 14 digs. Madison Carson and Deana Shelton had three digs each. Carson led in assists with eight.

Neoga picked up a win over Bement in a non-conference matchup Monday.

The Indians won in three sets, 25-15, 11-25, 25-19. Mary Hill led in kills with 11 and blocks with two. Olivia Titus had seven aces. Aly Easton also had two blocks and led in assists with 14. Jessica Atwell led in digs with four.

Neoga also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-0.

Cumberland handed Flora a loss in three sets. The Pirates won the opener 25-22 but Flora came back to take the second set 25-19. Cumberland then had a hard-fought final set to win 26-24.

Cumberland was led by McMechan with 13 assists, Guyon with 27 digs, Sowers with nine kills and Guyon and McMechan with two aces each. The Pirates are 3-6 on the season.

In the junior varsity contest, Cumberland won 26-24, 25-14.
