Volleyball teams were coming from everywhere during the weekend at the Crossroads Classic Volleyball Tournament. The event was held on four courts at Effingham High School and at Effingham Junior High School and Sacred Heart.
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed first place while Teutopolis took fifth and Effingham was seventh, all in the Bronze Flight.
In Friday pool play action, Belleville Althoff beat Effingham 25-15, 25-20 and McCracken County downed the Hearts 25-15, 25-20. Windsor/Stew-Stras also lost twice to Indianapolis Chatard 17-25, 25-19, 29-27 and Glenbard West 25-23, 25-19. T-town lost twice to Normal University 26-24, 28-26 and Centennial 25-12, 25-23.
That dropped the three teams into the Bronze Flight where the Hearts lost to Illiana Christian 25-21, 25-19 and Teutopolis 25-22, 25-15. The Hearts then beat Daviess County 25-21, 25-22 for seventh place.
Windsor/Stew-Stras beat Daviess County 25-18, 25-11 and then downed Massac County 25-20, 25-22. The Hatchets then defeated Breese Central 12-25, 28-26, 15-10 for first place.
"The girls really stepped up and played some intense volleyball," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "I'm very proud of how they did. The match against Chatard was back and forth and the girls fought hard until the end. We were able to stay with Glenbard West who finished second in the Gold Flight. Megan probably had her best hitting game of the year at this one.
"Breese also was a hard fought match, especially after getting beat 25-11 in set one. They really had to turn their mentality around and they did just that. The girls played the net aggressively and had to stay on their toes for defense. I'm very proud of Mikayla for being so tough after her injury in the first match of the tournament. Kenzi did a nice job running the offense and Maria and Kasey had some nice games also."
Teutopolis lost to Breese Central 25-16, 25-20 then beat EHS 25-22, 25-15. In the fifth place contest, the Wooden Shoes won over Owensboro Catholic 25-15, 21-25, 15-11.
The championship of the whole tournament went to Belleville Althoff. Althoff lost the opener to Glenbard West 26-24 but came back to win 25-22, 25-18.
Third place went to Wheaton St. Francis 25-23, 25-19 over Festus St. Pius X.
