Altamont Nabs Own Crown, Volleyball Roundup

ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School captured the championship of its own volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Indians defeated Greenville 25-22, 26-24 then won over Arcola 25-9, 25-16. Altamont downed Nokomis 25-13, 25-15 and finished the sweep with a victory over Vandalia 26-28, 27-25, 15-8.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City competed in the tourney. The Bobcats won over Cumberland 22-25, 25-15, 15-9 then fell to South Central 25-20, 25-23. CHBC lost to Vandalia 25-15, 25-7 then went down to defeat against Arcola 23-25, 25-20, 15-12.

 At Mattoon

Neoga finished sixth at the Mattoon Volleyball Tournament Saturday and St. Elmo/Brownstown also competed.

The Indians lost to Mattoon 25-7, 25-16 then fell to Heyworth 25-15 25-24. Neoga fell to Pana 25-20, 25-11 then handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a loss 25-18, 25-21.

In the fifth place contest, Neoga fell to Pana again, 25-14, 25-11 to finish sixth.

St. Elmo/Brownstown lost to Taylorville 25-13, 25-10 then beat Sullivan 25-22, 15-25, 16-14. SEB fell to Warrensburg-Latham 25-18, 25-15 then fell to Neoga 25-18, 25-21.

At Mattoon

Newton competed in the Casey-Westfield Classic and picked up three wins and two losses.

The Eagles lost to Teutopolis 15-25, 25-23, 15-10 then fell to Edwards County (Albion), 25-17, 25-23. Newton then came back with a win over Monticello 25-19, 25-12.

Newton then competed in the Silver Division and won over Teutopolis 25-15, 25-23 and Olney 25-21, 25-22.

At Casey

Effingham competed in the Champaign Central Junior Varsity Tournament Saturday and won the consolation championship.

The Hearts lost to Peoria Notre Dame 25-23, 23-25, 15-4 then took wins over Urbana 25-10, 25-10 and Tuscola 25-11, 25-8.
