EHS Drops Apollo Match To Mt. Zion, Volleyball Roundup

Effingham High School dropped an Apollo Conference volleyball match to visiting Mount Zion Thursday.

The Hearts lost in two sets, 25-19, 25-13 to fall to 0-1 in the conference, 2-1 overall.

Jordan Christy led the Hearts in kills with five and aces with one. Aly Amstrong had six assists. Chloe Martin, Kourtney Cordes and Natalie Carie had two blocks each. Miranda Fox led in digs with five.

Mount Zion also claimed the junior varsity match, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14. EHS drops to 1-2.

In a freshman/sophomore match, the Braves took a 25-22, 20-12 win. The Hearts fall to 2-1.

At Effingham

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg remained unbeaten with a win over Cumberland. The Hatchets won 25-18, 25-14 Thursday evening.

"Starting to see a glimpes of my team from last year," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We are still working on several areas but we are getting better. We played more like a team tonight. We took advantage of several overpasses tonight but Cumberland did a pretty good job against us."

Mikayla Haddock led in aces with two. Megan Schlechte had 16 kills. Mackenzi Tabbert had 21 assists and six digs. The Hatchets are now 3-0 on the season.

South Central lost the opening set 25-23 but clawed back for a 25-21 count and then won the match 28-26 over St. Elmo/Brownstown Thursday.

Keely Smith led the Cougars with 13 points, three aces, seven kills and seven digs. Zoe Johnston added 12 points and six assists. Baylie Maske had seven assists.

SEB was led by Ashlyn Mitchell and Dana Shelton with three kills each. Madison Carson had 13 assists. Deana Shelton led in aces with four. Dana Shelton had 13 digs. Marlee Nolen led in points with 12.

SEB claimed the junior varsity win, 25-16, 25-21 and the freshman/sophomore contest 26-24, 25-14.

At St. Elmo

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City picked up a varsity victory over Ramsey Thursday evening.

The Bobcats won 25-12, 25-10 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Allie Stell led in aces with five. Lauren Wojcik had six kills and three blocks. Taylor Oldham led in assists with four. Renee Buzzard, Olivia Witteborg and Kylee Bertin had three digs each.

CHBC also claimed the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-21.

Dieterich split wins with visiting Marshall Thursday.

Marshall captured the varsity match 25-20, 25-21. Dieterich drops to 0-4 on the season.

Lauren Garbe led in kills with four and blocks with three. Hannah Hunzinger had six assists. Nicole Flood led in digs with nine.

In the junior varsity contest, Dieterich won 25-19, 17-25, 25-19 and improves to 2-2.

Altamont took a victory over Casey-Westfield in a non-conference matchup Thursday.

The Indians won 25-17, 26-24 to improve to 2-0. Jackson and Mette had four kills each. Grimsley led in digs with 10. Jackson also led in aces with six and blocks with two. Hoene had six assists. Mette also had two blocks.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity contest 25-17, 25-23 and is 2-0.

Neoga moved its record to 2-0 on the young season with a 26-24, 25-18 win over Okaw Valley Thursday evening.

Mary Hill led in kills with 11 and had two blocks for the winners. Aly Easton led in digs with six and had 10 assists. Blair Banning led in assists with 11.

The Indians fell the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-16.
