Windsor/Stew-Stras Headed to State in Volleyball

MOUNT PULASKI -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School is headed to state. The Hatchets claimed the championship of the Class 1A Mount Pulaski Super-Sectional Saturday.

WSS defeated Springfield Lutheran 25-17, 25-20 to improve to 34-5.

"I am so proud of the girls," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "They kept fighting and adjusting to win set two. You just couldn't ask much more from them. This is such a good group of kids and they deserve this.

"We are all very excited. Becca really had a good day shutting down their hitters. Our defense looked pretty strong and they didn't panic when we were down."

Becca Schlechte led the Hatchets in assists with 30. Megan Schlechte led in aces with two, kills with 10 and digs with nine. Carson Cole also had nine digs. Calla Roney had two block assists and B. Schlechte had a solo block.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will now travel to Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal to face Lanark Eastland in a 10:30 a.m. match Friday. Norris City-Omaha-Enfield will take on Sciota West Prairie at 9 a.m. in the opening contest. The winners advance to the championship match Saturday at 10:30 a.m. while the losers will meet for third place at 9 a.m.

State finals tickets for Friday and Saturday will be sold for $8 per session in the following order at both Stew-Stras and Windsor high schools Monday:

2:45-3 p.m. -- all volleyball team members and coaches

3-3:20 p.m. -- all certified and noncertified staff followed by high school students

3:20-4 p.m. -- general public

Class 2A Trenton Wesclin Super-Sectional

Newton saw its season come to a close in the Trenton Wesclin Super-Sectional Saturday.

The Eagles fell to Belleville Althoff 25-15, 25-16. The loss ends the Eagles season at 35-4.

Bergbower had eight kills while Hartrich led in assists with 14. Cohorst had five digs. Hardiek, Bergbower and Cohorst had one ace each.

Class 1A Christopher Super-Sectional

Clay City's season came to a close with a loss in the Christopher Super-Sectional Saturday.

Clay City fell to Norris City/Omaha/Enfield 25-17, 25-20.

 

Class 3A Effingham Super-Sectional

Effingham hosted a super-sectional featuring Mascoutah and Taylorville Saturday.

Mascoutah was a winner 25-21, 25-17.
