Bulldogs Win, Hearts Season Comes to Close in Volleyball Regionals

BETHANY -- Effingham St. Anthony High School opened play in the Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Volleyball Regional with a win over Cerro Gordo Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs won the opener 25-15 then came back for the match with a 25-14 count.
Hannah Will led the Bulldogs in kills with eight while Marci Mills added seven. Katie Kabbes had two aces. Jenna Woltman led in digs with nine.
In the second match, Neoga picked up a victory over Bement. Bement won the opener 25-18 but Neoga came back with 25-14, 25-19 sets for the match.
St. Anthony and Neoga will now meet for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

Class 3A Taylorville Regional
Effingham saw its season come to a close with a loss to Rochester in the Taylorville Regional Tuesday.
Rochester won in two sets, 25-16, 25-21. The Hearts were led by Kourtney Cordes with four kills. Sidney Webster had six assists. Victoria Garren and Kaitlyn Baker led in digs with 10 each.
The Hearts finished the season fourth in the Apollo Conference with a 4-6 mark and ended at 13-24 overall.
In the second match, Taylorville beat Greenville 25-14, 25-15. Taylorville now meets Rochester at 6 p.m. Thursday for the regional title.

Class 1A Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Regional
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg continues to roll along. The hosts of the regional downed Martinsville 25-12, 25-4 to improve to 30-5 on the season.
"The girls were able to add a check mark on our goals met for the season," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "Win No. 30 can be marked off. Our passing tonight wasn't as strong as I'd like but Becca is really good at making the most out of those passes. We will use our practice tomorrow to reinforce some corrections that need adjusted for Thursday. I think a lot of it was still being exhausted from a long hard day on Saturday."
Mikayla Haddock led in aces with four. Mackenzi Tabbert led in kills with eight and digs with six. Megan Schlechte also had six digs. Becca Schlechte had 14 assists.
In the second match, Chrisman claimed a 25-16, 25-17 win over Arcola. Chrisman and Windsor/Stew-Stras will meet for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
WSS Regional

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional
South Central moved into the championship match with a 25-8, 28-26 win over Hutsonville Tuesday.
The Cougars were led by Kacie Crain with nine points, eight digs and two aces and Kendall Burleyson with two aces and nine kills. Serena Germany added four stuff blocks. South Central is now 24-8 on the season.
Cisne took the second match 25-15, 25-14 over Dieterich. Dieterich was led by Lauren Garbe with 11 digs, Hanna Ruholl with four kills and Madeline Aherin and Hannah Hunzinger with four assists each. Allyssa Boerngen had one ace.
Dieterich ends the season with a 9-19 record.
South Central will now meet Cisne at 6 p.m. Thursday for the championship.
Hutsonville Regional

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional
Teutopolis saw its season close with a loss in its own regional Tuesday.
The Wooden Shoes fell to Vandlaia 25-21, 25-21. T-town was led by Joelen Bueker with 10 digs, Savannah Grimes with eight points and six assists and Macy Michels with four blocks.
"The girls have gained in so many areas this season," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "But the one thing we haven't solved is winning a big game. Teutopolis sports have a long history of championships in every sport except volleyball that is. There are several reasons we lost tonight. Vandalia played well and deserves to be commended for their perfomrnace. You could point to our blocking errors or our 15 hitting errors but the real problem is we never got into our offense. The girls admitted to being nervous which obviously contributed to our lack of focus. We have to become tougher mentally as we work on improving our skill set."
In the opening match, Shelbyville beat Cumberland 25-19, 25-16.
Shelbyville and Vandalia now meet for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
Teutopolis Regional

Class 1A Nokomis Regional
St. Elmo/Brownstown fell to Mount Pulaski to see its season end Tuesday evening.
Mount Pulaski was a winner in two sets, 25-10, 25-13. Marlee Nolen led in kills with three and points with three for SEB. Elissa Barron had one ace. Madison Carson led in digs with eight.
In the opening match, Springfield Lutheran won over Nokomis 25-10, 25-13.
Springfield Lutheran and Mount Pulaski square off for the title Thursday at 6 p.m.
Nokomis Regional

Class 2A Red Hill (Bridgeport) Regional
Newton continues its stellar season by beating Lawrenceville 25-20, 25-8 in the opening match Tuesday.
The Eagles were led by Hardiek, Frohning and Bergbower with two aces each. Bergbower had nine kills. Hardiek led in assists with 22. Smith had two blocks and Hardiek had 11 digs.
The Eagles are now 32-3 on the season.
In the second match, Robinson won over Casey-Westfield 25-19, 25-22.
Newton will square off against Robinson at 6 p.m. Thursday for the regional championship.
Red Hill Regional

It will be host Clay City and Oblong for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.
Clay City beat Patoka 25-18, 25-19 while Oblong was a 25-17, 25-10 winner over Wayne City Tuesday evening.
