EHS Wins Opener, Regional Volleyball Roundup

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School opened action in the Class 3A Taylorville Volleyball Regional with a victory Monday evening.

The Hearts handed Springfield Southeast a loss. EHS won the opener 25-19 before Southeast came back to take the second set 25-23. The Hearts then battled to a 25-23 victory for the match.

Kourtney Cordes led EHS in kills with eight. Sidney Webster had 18 assists and 20 digs. Abbey Meinhart led in aces with three. Hannah Pike and Chloe Martin had three blocks each. The Hearts improve to 13-23.

In the second match, Greenville downed Springfield Lanphier 25-17, 25-20.

In tonight's action, Effingham takes on Rochester at 5:30 followed by Greenville facing Taylorville at 6:30.

Class 1A Nokomis Regional

Host Nokomis ended Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City's season in opening round play of regional action Monday.

Nokomis beat CHBC 25-15, 25-10. CHBC was led by Felicia Johnson with two kills and 10 digs, Grace Doedtman with two blocks and two assists. Kara Clearwater, Haley Atchley, Johnson and Taylor Oldham had one ace each.

CHBC finishes season play with a 7-26 record.

In the second match, St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed a victory over Ramsey 25-14, 25-9.

Elissa Barron and Brandi Howard had five kills each for the winners. Madison Carson, Ashlyn Mitchell and Tessa Philpot had two aces each. Philpot led in digs with 11. Barron tallied six points.

In tonight's matches, Springfield Lutheran faces Nokomis at 5:30 followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown against Mount Pulaski at 6:30.

Class 1A Clay City  Regional

North Clay (Louisville) dropped from further season play with a loss in opening round play at the Clay City Regional.

Patoka was a winner over the Cardinals 25-20, 25-23. Audrey Fleener, Taylor Jones and Rachel Wiley led North Clay in digs with two each. Jones had two aces. Darcy Fender led in blocks with six.

In the second match, Wayne City won over Webber Township (Bluford) 25-23, 25-19.

Tonight's matches will have Clay City against Patoka at 5:30 followed by Oblong taking on Wayne City at 6:30.

North Clay -- Fleener, 1 dig; Holste, 2 digs; Jones, 23 blocks, 1 kill, 2 digs, 2 aces; Fender, 6 blocks, 1 dig; Walters, 1 kill, 1 dig; Wiley, 2 digs; Rinehart, 1 kill, 1 dig

 

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Cumberland and Vandalia picked up victories in the first two matches at Teutopolis Monday.

Cumberland defeated Altamont 25-23, 25-23. Vandalia lost its opener 25-22 but Vandalia came back 26-24, 25-21.

Cumberland faces Shelbyville tonight at 5:30 followed by Teutopolis taking on Vandalia at 6:30.

 

Class 1A Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Regional

Only one match was on the agenda in this regional. Martinsville claimed a 25-15, 25-20 win over Broadlands Heritage Monday.

Martinsville will now face host Windsor/Stew-Stras tonight at 5:30 followed by Arcola against Chrisman at 6:30.

 

Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

There were no area teams in this one Monday evening but the winners advance to face local squads tonight.

Cerro Gordo downed Bethany Okaw Valley 25-22, 25-22 in the opener. Bement then defeated Villa Grove 25-14, 25-20.

Effingham St. Anthony takes on Cerro Gordo tonight at 5:30 followed by Neoga meeting Bement at 6:30.

 

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional

Host Hutsonville was a winner over Grayville 25-15, 17-25, 25-17.

Hutsonville advances to meet South Central at 5:30 p.m. today followed by Dieterich against Cisne at 6:30.

 

Class 2A Red HIll (Bridgeport) Regional

Only one match was on the agenda at this regional. Lawrenceville was a winner over host Red Hill 25-14, 25-23.

Newton will now meet Lawrenceville at 5:30 followed by Casey-Westfield against Robinson at 6:30.
