Newton Beats T-town, WSS Claims Win

NEWTON -- The Eagles of Newton picked up another volleyball victory Monday evening, this one over Teutopolis.
Newton won 25-18, 25-18. Bergbower tallied 10 kills and had eight digs for the winners. Hartrich finished with 18 assists. Earnest and Hartrich had a block each. Hardiek, Smith, Cohorst, Hartrich and Frohning had one ace each.
Newton is now 24-2 on the season while T-town dropped to 13-11.
T-town was led by Savannah Grimes with nine digs, six assists and six points and Macy Michels with six blocks and three kills.
Newton also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-21, 12-25, 25-22. T-town dropped to 19-3. The two teams split freshman wins. Newton won 25-21 but T-town claimed the second set 25-23.

At Arcola
Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor handed Arcola a non-conference loss 25-3, 25-11. The Hatchets improve to 18-5 on the season.
"The girls were able to play around with some different positions and some different sets," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "The girls did very well controlling our side of the net. We started set two a little sloppy and Arcola had some very nice digs to give us a push."
Megan Schlechte led the Hatchets in aces with five. Mackenzi Tabbert had nine kills. Becca Schlechte led in assists with 21 and digs with nine.
WSS won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-14 to improve to 9-7 and split the freshman/sophomore match, winning 25-19 while Arcola won 25-11. WSS is 5-7-2.

In action Saturday at the Shelbyville Tournament, Effingham nabbed two victories and suffered three losses.
The Hearts lost to Rochester 25-22, 25-15 and Shelbyville 25-20, 25-15. EHS then beat Nokomis 25-8, 25-8 and won over Neoga 25-18, 25-22. The Hearts then dropped a match to Pana 25-22, 26-24.
